Personal Profile
Ma Zhanbing, style name Shan Niao, pseudonym Yangluo Mountain Man, also known as Master of Xinhuatang, was born in 1972 in Zezhou, Shanxi. Influenced by his family heritage from an early age, he developed a deep connection with calligraphy. For decades, he has diligently practiced without pause, striving hard and boldly exploring various styles. He began with Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan, then studied the Two Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi), followed by Mi Fu and Huang Tingjian, absorbing the strengths of numerous schools, selecting their essence. Having grown up in the mountains, the beauty of nature subtly influenced his understanding of calligraphic art. He skillfully incorporates these elements into his work—evident in his pieces—sometimes flowing and entwined, sometimes surging forward like a waterfall,at times rustic, at others weathered. Each piece always brings a fresh impression, offering viewers a pleasing and delightful experience. Ma Zhanbing excels in running script and cursive script, particularly large-character "bangshu" calligraphy, and has also explored seal carving. His running script is characterized by agile, vivid, and unique brushwork, presenting an original artistic style. His compositions are structurally rigorous, creatively shaped, emphasizing strength and seeking variation, with steady brushwork that conveys a sense of solemnity, robustness, firmness, boldness, and elegant freedom. Ma's cursive script is naturally disciplined, pursuing rich ink tonality, sharp yet precise, simple yet full of charm. It integrates the bone structure of the Two Wangs, the thickness of Yan Lu Gong (Yan Zhenqing), and the wild energy of Zhang Xu and Huai Su, fully expressing ease, sincerity, gracefulness, and unrestrained vitality. His works are highly spiritual, achieving excellence both in spirit and form—a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity, artistry and cultivation. Ma Zhanbing’s large-character calligraphy is neither artificial nor forced; it is direct, uninhibited, and spontaneous—not merely enlarging small characters or exaggerating posture. His bangshu possesses rhythm and momentum, ink richness and linear beauty, grandeur combined with refinement, boldness without vulgarity, distinct individuality, forging a unique path filled with contemporary spirit. Regarding the understanding of calligraphic art: calligraphy is a technical discipline requiring skill, demanding in-depth study and focused research. The path of learning must be correct—starting from ancient methods, thoroughly comprehending the true essence of calligraphy, writing with heart. Particularly in creation, one's insight into calligraphy is crucial. While following and inheriting traditional brushwork, he also dares to explore and innovate within contemporary art. Artistic creation should possess its own distinctive ink language, vibrant individuality, capable of expressing the deepest aspects of one's soul.
