Master Da Ming
Personal Profile
Master Daming, secular name Zhang Fengping, was born in 1955 in Cangzhou, Hebei, and ordained as a monk in Jiangxi in 1999. Under the enlightenment of Amitabha Buddha in the monastery, he began studying traditional Chinese culture. Master Daming first studied Yan Zhenqing’s style, then Liu Gongquan’s, followed by Wei stele and clerical scripts, including the Duobao Pagoda style. Some have commented that his calligraphy synthesizes the strengths of many schools, creating his own unique style—within rules yet beyond rules, beyond rules yet within rules. Through chanting Buddha’s name and practicing Chan meditation, he receives the blessings of the Buddha. The Master never participates in competitions; he has written over one hundred thousand pieces of Buddhist wisdom phrases across the country, joyfully sharing them with others as Dharma connections. He renounces competition and stays far from fame and material gain. He never charges for his calligraphy and even mails them free of charge, responding to every request. His works contain the brushwork essence of Zhong Yao—though others have commented on this, he himself remains unaware, unrestrained and flowing naturally. He uses calligraphy to cultivate truth, and painting and calligraphy to cultivate virtue. Without virtue, even the most beautiful art is but an embroidered pillow. The Master enlightens and teaches people through his calligraphy, using brushwork as Chan practice to cultivate purity of mind and the Prajna of written words. “Ink Fragrance, Buddhist Affinity”—Venerable Master Daming currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Chinese Buddhist Association and is a renowned calligrapher.
