Personal Profile
Li Qi, a renowned landscape painter, was born in October 1961 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and is the 56th-generation descendant of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty. In 1962, to share the nation’s burden during difficult times, he returned with his parents to their ancestral home—the remote village of Henglu in Pingshui, Shaoxing, nestled deep in the mountainous region of Shanyin. His grandfather, surnamed Li, was a celebrated local artisan renowned for upholding ritual propriety and artistic heritage. His lacquer painting craftsmanship was exceptionally refined and widely admired by neighboring villagers; many still treasure his works as family heirlooms to this day.
Li Qi, raised under the family’s strict moral and artistic traditions and deeply influenced by his grandfather, developed a childhood passion for his grandfather’s lacquer paintings. This interest grew stronger with age. Despite limited resources, young Li Qi would use the ground, walls, and wooden planks as canvases and charcoal mixed with water as paint. His naive brushstrokes captured the beauty within his tender heart, awakening the artistic soul hidden deep within him. By high school, his passion for calligraphy and painting had intensified; he frequently contributed to school blackboards and gallery exhibitions, earning widespread praise from teachers and students alike.
Li Qi comes from a family with a proud military tradition—himself, his father, and his son have all served in the armed forces, making their three-generation military legacy a celebrated local story. In 1979, Li Qi enlisted and was stationed on Nanji Island in the Wenzhou Military District of Zhejiang Province. Despite the rigorous military training, he persistently pursued his passion for calligraphy and painting, dedicating every spare moment to his art. During this time, he enrolled in the correspondence course for calligraphy and painting offered by China Central Radio & TV University.
Li Qi pours his emotions into landscapes, seeking harmony between heaven and intellect while constantly striving for perfection. He firmly believes that art originates from life and must learn from nature. He travels extensively through mountains and rivers, exploring natural scenery and visiting ancient sites. He has made multiple pilgrimages to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang; the grandeur of those murals profoundly inspired him and found expression in his own paintings. Today, he has created numerous large-scale murals, considered masterpieces that elicit admiration from all viewers.
In 1983, Li Qi became a disciple of Yao Zhiliang, a renowned veteran calligrapher and painter from Shaoxing, which significantly advanced his artistic skills. His works have been exhibited in major cities nationwide and are collected by institutions such as the China Academy of Art, the National Art Archives, and many domestic and international art enthusiasts. Zhu Min, a full-time painter at the Chinese National Academy of Painting, commented that Li Qi’s overall composition and depiction of mist and clouds in his landscapes are truly excellent. The celebrated landscape painter Wang Zhongxian praised Li Qi’s landscape paintings as genuinely outstanding. Professor Yan Youjun of the China Academy of Art remarked that Li Qi’s depictions of mountains and pines are particularly impressive. Recognized as a leading landscape painter of Jiangnan, Li Qi is now formally accepted as an inner disciple by Zhu Min, painter at the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. His works have attained Level 9 proficiency in landscape painting as certified by the China Academy of Art, certificate number 007201165421.
Today, Li Qi’s works are highly appreciated by academic experts and regarded by the public as those of the most investment-worthy, renowned landscape painter.
