Shanghai calligrapher Gu Benjian, a student of teachers Gao Shixiong and Liu Xiaoqing, is currently the director of the Shanghai Badaitou Calligraphy and Painting Academy, the director of the Ningyun Han Calligraphy and Painting Art Museum, vice president of the Shanghai China-West Art Association, and a member of the Shanghai Calligraphers' Association. In 2011, he was awarded the title of "Outstanding Contemporary Artist" during the fourth Sino-Japanese Friendly Cultural and Artistic Exchange. In 2013, together with many calligraphers and painters, he created "The Soul of National Rejuvenation" for the Central Party School, and wrote the preface and postscript in running script. In 2015, he was invited by the Chen Yun Memorial to write the full text of the winning poetry and couplets for the 110th anniversary of Comrade Chen Yun's birth.
Gu Benjian's calligraphy is bold and free-spirited, with exquisite brushwork, where speed meets hesitation, sometimes elegant and sometimes refined, exuding a grand Tang Dynasty atmosphere. His running script flows like clouds and water, with rich flavor, and has its own unique style, while his regular script is dignified and elegant, with profound skill.
