Personal Profile

Yuan Zhengqin, self-styled Hongshan Dragon, was born in April 1964. As he was born in the Year of the Dragon, he has a deep affection for dragons, and the spirit of the dragon and horse has always inspired him to move forward. He is currently a member of the Party Committee of the Hongshan District Trade Union in Chifeng City and Chairperson of the Audit Committee. He also serves as an advisor to the Hongshan District Calligraphy Association.

An offhand remark by his grandfather—“Your handwriting is quite spirited”—set him on a journey through the halls of calligraphy art. He began by copying Liu Gongquan’s small regular script, then moved on to study Yan Zhenqing’s Qinli Stele. Since 2003, he has been copying the Lanting Xu, Shengjiao Xu, Cao Quan Stele, and the Dunbaozi stele摹本. In 1997, he was admitted as a member of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Calligraphy Association. He has received awards including a Bronze Medal at the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region’s 50th Anniversary Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition, an Outstanding Award at the National Jin’e Cup Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition, an Outstanding Work Award at the Zhouzhuang National Calligraphy Exhibition, and a Bronze Medal at the China Balin Stone National Calligraphy Exhibition.  He excels in running script, grounds himself in Yan-style regular script, and occasionally explores clerical script. He follows tradition and began his artistic journey through meticulous copying.  For many years, he has cultivated the philosophy and habit that “Having books is best, writing characters is blessing.” Every morning, after exercising, he spends one hour spreading paper and practicing calligraphy. Art has no end; he seeks joy in his own interests, finding endless pleasure within it.
