Lei Changsheng, pen name Caogen, born in 1955 in Hanshou County, Changde, is a National First-Class Master of Calligraphy and a leading figure in Chinese art.
Currently serving as: Council Member of the Art Development Center of the Ministry of Culture, Member of the China Artists Association, Member of the Hunan Province Calligraphers Association, Member of the Hunan Provincial Direct Calligraphers Association, Consultant of Huangpu Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, Vice President of Qingfeng Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, Vice President of Shenzhou Yangguang Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, Member of the Hunan Province Retired Cadres Calligraphers Association, Member of the Changsha City Calligraphers Association, and Specialized Calligrapher appointed by the Hunan Province Collectors Association.
 
Since childhood, he has been passionate about painting and calligraphy, meticulously studying and practicing brushwork from renowned calligraphers throughout history. His primary focus is on clerical script, and he has thoroughly researched and mastered all five major styles of Chinese calligraphy, achieving exceptional proficiency. His personal works have been carved into temple structures and have participated in more than eighty national and provincial-level painting and calligraphy competitions and exhibitions, winning numerous awards. In 2017, he was appointed as a contracted artist for the Communist Youth League Central Committee’s Art Figure Program. Some of his works have been exhibited and permanently collected by the China International Yangtze River Celebrity Collection Museum, Hunan University, and Long Island University (USA). Several pieces are also held in the collections of embassies of multiple African nations, as well as by leaders and friends from various countries. His works have been engraved in many temples.
 
Mr. Lei Changsheng actively supports public welfare causes, donating all proceeds from his artworks to underprivileged students. He won first prize in the National Online Calligraphy Competition, received an excellence award in the Fourth China Style National Calligraphy Competition, earned first prize in the National Calligraphy Competition commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the War of Resistance Against Japan, and received the Gold Medal at the National Calligraphy Exhibition commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Long March, which was displayed in Beijing. His work “The Moon When Will Appear...” was selected for carving by the Guangxi Stele Forest Institute. In 2017, he won the International Gold Medal in the Yangsha Lake Cup Ink Painting Competition as China’s World Tourism City Ambassador. In 2018, he received an excellence award in the National Diamond Sutra Calligraphy Competition, among other honors. Multiple sets of his works have been issued as collectible postage stamps both domestically and internationally.
