Personal Profile

Yang Shanming, male, Han ethnicity, born in 1955, pen name: Hongnong Delan. Guangxi Guilin City, ancestral home Hunan, National First-Class Calligrapher, a leading master of contemporary running-cursive large-character calligraphy in China.

Yang Shanming inherited his family's scholarly tradition and developed a deep passion for calligraphy from an early age. Uninterrupted by seasons, he studied the styles of Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Wang Xizhi, and Ouyang Xun, later emulating Zhao Mengfu's scripts. He began his regular script practice with Yan Zhenqing's "Qin Li Bei," dedicating the most effort to this work, followed by several years of study of Yan's "Dongfang Shuo Hua Zan Bei." In running script, he initially copied Yan's Three Drafts, then shifted to studying Mi Fu's "Tiao Xi Shi Juan" and "Shu Su Tie," occasionally also practicing Wang Duo's running script. For cursive script, he emulated Sun Guoting's "Shu Pu"; for clerical script, he studied the "Zhang Qian Bei"; and for seal script, he practiced the "San Shi Pan." His works exude a refined, literary charm, combining softness with strength in harmonious balance. He emphasizes variations in spacing, dryness, wetness, darkness, and lightness in character composition, presenting a unique artistic appeal through every stroke and form.

Personal Honors

Mr. Yang has participated in numerous domestic calligraphy and painting competitions, winning multiple awards; his works have been exhibited in countries such as Singapore and Thailand.

In 2017, he won the Excellent Award at the 10th China Calligraphy and Painting Art Competition.
In 2016, his calligraphy work won the Gold Award at the 12th Cross-Strait Calligraphy and Painting Masters Exhibition.

Mr. Yang's calligraphy exhibits abundant brushpower and dynamic, elegant forms, embodying the rounded, delicate beauty of Zhao Mengfu. His brushwork is meticulous and precise, with rich, smooth ink application, fluid and skillful strokes, each character arranged with rhythmic grace and profound elegance, possessing exceptional aesthetic value.
