Personal Profile
Xiao Genqian, male, was born in April 1940 in Liányuán City, Hunan Province. He is a renowned contemporary calligrapher and a world-renowned cultural figure. His original name is Xiao Zhanquan, and he uses pen names such as Master of Liuyi Studio, Brush of the Southern Land, and Little Huaisu. He is currently a member of the Calligraphy Education Committee of the China Academy of Calligraphy Art, a member of the Art Committee of the China Calligraphy Academy, a lifetime artistic advisor to the China Auction Enterprise Alliance, and a specially invited artistic advisor to "Motan Yi Yuan." He has been honored as an artist of both virtue and artistry, and his calligraphy works are collected by the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Since childhood, Xiao Genqian has loved reading classical Chinese literature, delved into traditional Chinese studies, and been passionately devoted to calligraphy, persistently practicing and studying calligraphy and painting art for over seventy years. He is indifferent to fame and fortune, always modest, and embodies both virtue and artistic excellence—truly a "late-blooming talent." Drawing from ancient traditions while innovating, he has developed a unique aesthetic in calligraphy. Master Xiao’s calligraphic art extensively encompasses bronze script, regular script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script, integrating diverse styles with remarkable mastery. His variant clerical script stands out uniquely, and he is especially skilled in cursive script. Calligraphy critics praise his oracle bone and bronze script as naturally harmonious, blending ancient charm with fresh imagery; his regular script is grounded in Yan Ti style, incorporating elements of Ouyang’s technique, presenting simplicity and weightiness; his running script is steady and grand, with brushstrokes imbued with spiritual vitality and elegant composure; his clerical script reflects the legacy of Han bamboo slips, employing natural dry ink and absorbing the essence of the Shimen Song stele; his cursive script reaches its zenith, directly drawing inspiration from Huaisu, skillfully integrating light and heavy, empty and solid, dense and faint, black and white, thick and thin strokes into a cohesive whole, creating a distinctive style that is both dynamic and grounded, majestic and powerful. In multi-character compositions, each line flows with vital energy, every stroke is precisely executed, and each character speaks with life; in large-character works, ink and brush flow freely, strokes are forceful and resonant, exuding grandeur and dignity. His brushwork demonstrates profound mastery, effortless and fluid, often employing central tip strokes—a hallmark of high-level calligraphic artistry. His unique technique endows lines with rich, lively rhythm and melodic beauty, setting him apart as a singular figure in the field!
Xiao Genqian’s calligraphy and painting works have been selected and awarded in numerous domestic and international calligraphy competitions. They are collected by more than 100 institutions, including the National Palace Museum in Taipei. His personal profile has been included in over 60 reference publications such as "China Collection," "Art and Prosperity," and "Collection of Works from the First National Invitation Exhibition of Calligraphy Masters." His works have been exhibited in Japan, the Philippines, and other countries, earning him widespread acclaim both at home and abroad, and he is highly cherished by collectors, calligraphy enthusiasts, and the broader society.
