Personal Profile
Hou Qingfeng, male, born on February 15, 1972, is from Da'an City, Jilin Province. In 1990, he was admitted to Anguang Normal School in Baicheng City, Jilin Province, where he first encountered hard-pen calligraphy. He is currently teaching at Laifu School in Shao Guo Town, Da'an City, Jilin Province. In 1997, he received an Outstanding Award in the He Xiang Stele (National) Hard-Pen Calligraphy Competition; in 1999, he won the Excellence Award in the Tongzhou Stele (National) Hard-Pen Calligraphy Competition, which led to his membership in the China Hard-Pen Calligraphy Association. Since then, he has repeatedly won excellence awards in provincial and regional calligraphy competitions (exhibitions). In spring 2014, he began studying traditional calligraphy and has continued to study it ever since. In his calligraphy studies, he focuses primarily on Bingsen Li script and Qi Gong's style (regular, running, and cursive scripts). Through his research, he has deeply understood that the essence of calligraphy lies not only in character structure but also in meticulous study of brushwork and ink techniques. Starting in October 2016, he began practicing suspended-arm technique (using large brushes with long tips, goat-hair brushes, and suspending the arm/wrist to write small characters—with a minimum character diameter of 1.5 cm)—and his skill has gradually improved. While practicing suspended-arm technique, he has also deeply studied various brush techniques and has now mastered such methods as "cone drawing on sand," "leaking roof stains," "bent hairpin," "seal imprinting on clay," and "startled snake entering grass." Since November this year, upon the suggestion of a kind fellow calligrapher, he has begun studying composition and further exploring ink techniques. Now, his Bingsen Li and Qi Gong styles have taken initial shape. Local calligraphy enthusiasts in Da'an have encouraged him, saying his work is already very similar to the originals and suggesting he try switching styles. Yet he still cannot bring himself to do so and plans to continue researching for another ten years, or even for his entire life. Meanwhile, he is also exploring other famous ancient and modern calligraphy models. There is plenty of time—everything is still on the journey.
