Personal Profile
Shao Zehua was born in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province in 1970. He has been studying calligraphy since childhood. He started with the regular scripts of Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan, and also studied Han dynasty clerical script and large seal script, mainly focusing on the study of stele collections, and specialized in cursive and running scripts. He has successively practiced the works of Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Sun Guoting, Li Bai, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, Wang Chong, Chen Chun, etc. For painting, he started with Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, and Dong Qichang, and explored the styles of Song and Yuan dynasties, as well as the "Four Monks" and "Four Wangs" of the early Qing Dynasty. He also studied the works of modern painters such as Chen Shaomei, Huang Binhong, and Lu Yanshao. His main focus is landscape painting, and his works emphasize changes in void and solid, sparse and dense, light and dark, while expressing imagery and poetic scenes. The green mountains and clear waters in his paintings seem to immerse the viewer, giving room for imagination. The integration of poetry and painting in his works embodies the aesthetic pursuit of the beauty of artistic conception, which aligns with the traditional Chinese cultural characteristic of combining poetry, calligraphy, and painting.
In his paintings, one can see that every stroke of outlining, rubbing, and dotting reveals the spirit and momentum of calligraphy, with smooth lines and a heavy texture, highlighting the changes between void and solid, thick and thin, dry and wet, light and heavy in landscape painting. This gives his works a musical rhythm, making them viewable, walkable, navigable, and livable. His calligraphy works are mostly in running and cursive scripts, drawing from ancient sources, with refined taste. As the saying goes, an artist without literary cultivation finds it difficult to create exquisite works. His profound literary cultivation gives his calligraphy and painting a sense of vitality, talent, and elegance, making his works express more diverse artistic conceptions and formal beauty.
His works have been exhibited multiple times in exhibitions hosted by the China National Academy of Painting, the Jiangsu Provincial Government Workers' Trade Union, and the Shenzhen Calligraphers Association. He was selected for the 5th Shenzhen Creative Calligraphy Exhibition, selected for the Shenzhen Calligraphy Masters Series Exhibition, and won the Achievements Award at the "Belt and Road" National Calligraphy and Painting Masters Invitation Exhibition. He has repeatedly received second prizes in the Jiangsu Provincial Political and Legal Organs Trade Union Youth League Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition. He once studied at Wuxi Calligraphy Art Specialized School, and is a national-level fine artist and auctioneer. He is currently Vice President of the China National Academy of Painting, Director of the Guangdong Branch, member of the China Calligraphy Academy, member of the Academic Committee of China National Academy of Painting, member of the China Folk Culture Association's Ethnic Calligraphy and Painting Art Creation and Exchange Center, and member of the Lianyungang City Artists Association, Calligraphers Association, and Writers Association. The author is in his prime, and on the path of art, he is diligent and persistent in pursuing perfection, making his calligraphy and painting works highly collectible. Before 2000, he worked in the Lianyungang Municipal Government, and before 2017, he served in a major group's Shenzhen branch.
