Cai Dongfa
Personal Profile
Cai Dongfa, male, from Linhai City, Zhejiang Province. Pen names: Shunge, Xinhua. Cai Dongfa has loved calligraphy since childhood. At just over ten years old, he began practicing the regular script of Liu Gongquan and Zhao Mengfu, then progressed to the "Two Wangs" (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi). In his youth, he studied the cursive scripts of Sun Guoting and Huai Su, gaining deep insight into their essence. He was greatly favored by his mentor Li Wencai—a renowned calligrapher, calligraphy theorist, and acclaimed as China's foremost copyist of ancient calligraphy—and received authentic teachings from him. Cai Dongfa’s calligraphy features smooth, unrestrained, naturally flowing lines, executed freely yet within disciplined form. Skilled at expressive improvisation, he writes with heart and emotion—sometimes soaring like a celestial horse, sometimes gliding like drifting clouds—imbuing his work with strong dynamism. His tonal variations in ink are achieved through distinctive brush techniques involving speed, slowness, and flying white strokes, earning praise from fellow calligraphers: "Fluid lines, complex layers, undulating rhythms, with qi permeating the entire piece." The famous singer and calligrapher Huo Feng commended his work as: "Deeply rooted in method and principle, wrist movements unfathomable, taste as sweet as honey, wonderfully beyond words!"
