Personal Profile
Shan Yaozong, styled Nanshan Hermit, is a state-gift designated artist and National First-Class Artist. A native of Wuzhou, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province, he began learning painting at the age of ten, sketching figures, animals, and landscapes from life. Gifted since childhood, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to mastering painting techniques. In his youth, he sought instruction from numerous renowned masters. Even during turbulent times, he persisted in painting, using his brush to uphold his inner convictions—undaunted by hardships in cowsheds and farms, pursuing only the richness of his spiritual ideals. Deeply inspired by celebrated artists, he received direct tutelage from masters such as Li Kuchan, Li Keran, Zhu Qizhan, and Jiang Haiqi, inheriting authentic traditions from the Qi School, Li Kuchan, Lingnan School, and Chang’an School. He is thus regarded as an exceptional inheritor of the Qi School, synthesizing the essence of myriad schools, specializing in bird-and-flower painting while also excelling in figures, landscapes, and animals—a rare master proficient across all genres, immersed in ink and color for decades.          His animal paintings focus primarily on large animals—tigers, lions, monkeys, sheep, horses, and deer—with tigers and lions being particularly distinctive. His style, rooted in the Qi School, Lingnan School, and Chang’an School, has evolved into his own unique expression. His technique blends meticulous brushwork with freehand expression; his bold freehand animal and bird paintings and fine-brush works each possess distinctive characteristics. His ink shrimp paintings are especially outstanding, earning high praise from Gao Zhong, Qi Baishi’s last disciple and his close friend despite their age difference, who composed a poem commenting: “The Qi School’s shrimp-painting tradition has found its inheritor.” He independently developed a method of painting heavy-color fine-brush works directly on raw xuan paper, a technique widely acclaimed by experts both domestically and overseas. His works are collected by many major domestic collectors and primarily circulate in the United States, Singapore, and South Korea.
His works have repeatedly won gold, silver, and bronze awards in domestic and international calligraphy and painting exhibitions and have been included in numerous national elite compendiums.
