Wu Guoqiang, a native of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, with ancestral roots in Fengqiao Town, Zhuji City, Zhejiang Province, is known by the sobriquets “The Man of Wu Mountain” and “The Lover of Books.” He is a renowned calligrapher, member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, and a National First-Class Artist.
From childhood, he was influenced by family tradition, first studying Yan-style regular script, later copying Ouyang Xun’s characters, then practicing the running script of the Sage of Calligraphy from the “Lanting Xu,” while also learning the brushwork of Mi Fu and Su Shi. Upon偶然 encountering Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy, he was deeply delighted and practiced it ceaselessly. By fortunate coincidence, during his studies he met professors Zhu Letong and Zhu Heng of the China Academy of Art, receiving their guidance, which led to his gradual maturation in both Chinese painting and calligraphy. In 1986, he graduated from Zhejiang University with a major in Chinese Language and Literature, and subsequently enrolled in the Calligraphy and Seal Carving Department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art). Currently, he serves as Deputy Secretary-General of the Zhulin Hall of China Academy of Art, Guest Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sinology, Executive Director of the Chinese Art Research Association, Supervisor of the Zhejiang Branch, Distinguished Academician of the China Modern Art Research Institute, Deputy Secretary-General of the Zhejiang Branch of the Great Wall Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Association, and specially appointed teacher of Sinology and Fine Arts at Hangzhou Xingzhi Middle School, among other positions.
