He is renowned in the art world for his grand expressive flower and bird paintings, and he is also proficient in landscapes, calligraphy, seal carving, poetry, Western painting, and has a deep understanding of opera. Mr. Guo Shifu's flower and bird paintings are comprehensive, with a broad source and profound roots, tracing back to the great masters of modern times such as Wu Changshuo, Pan Tianshou, Qi Baishí, Zhu Qizhan, and further back to the two Li of Yangzhou, Bada Shanren, and Er Shi to Qingteng Baiyang, all of which have been used by him, forming a unique style. His painting style is solemn, simple, elegant, and firm, grand but not rough or savage, free-spirited yet with a solid quality inside. Every flower, leaf, grass, or stone is deeply reasonable and fully expressive, yet he has never fallen into a vulgar or bizarre style under the banner of "innovation," thus establishing a model for a generation in the field of contemporary grand expressive flower and bird painting in China. Mr. Guo Shifu is currently a member of the China Artists Association, a member of the Art Committee of Beijing Academy of Painting, a member of the senior professional title review committee for Beijing fine arts, a honorary director of the Modern Chinese Art Museum in Japan, and a national first-class art master. He once founded the first painting association in Beijing - the Hundred Flowers Painting Society (predecessor of the Beijing Flower and Bird Painting Research Society) and the China Ink Alliance. He has published large-scale painting collections and the "Master Techniques of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting" CD series. In 2010, he was selected for the Cultural Ministry's key case research project on the Chinese art market, "Chinese Contemporary Art Classic Masters · Guo Shifu."
