Personal Profile
Chen Jianguo, styled Tuo Tu and known by his art name Shen Shan Guai Mang, was born into a family of calligraphers in Linfen, Shanxi Province, where both his maternal grandfather and father were deeply knowledgeable in calligraphy. His works have won the "First Prize" at the Haiyu International Calligraphy and Painting Competition; the "Golden Brush Award" at the First China Temple Culture Forum Calligraphy, Poetry, and Couplet Competition, and he was honored with the title "Outstanding Calligrapher and Painter of Chinese Good Culture Promotion"; and the "First Prize" at the National First "Emperor Yao Cup" Calligraphy and Painting Competition, where he was invited alongside Liu Dawei, Chairman of the China Artists Association, and Yan Gongda, Vice Chairman of the China Calligraphers Association, as a "Guest Calligrapher and Painter."
In 2016, multiple works by Chen Jianguo were reviewed and approved by the U.S. postage stamp expert review committee and selected for inclusion in the "Memorial Collection of Outstanding Chinese Artists in China and the United States." Simultaneously, he was awarded the title "Outstanding Chinese Artist in China and the United States for 2016" and presented with a gold-plated certificate of honor bearing that title. Chen Jianguo has also had multiple calligraphy works included in the "Commemorative Stamp Collection for the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War."
His works have been collected by former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, renowned historian, jurist, and calligrapher Xia Jiajun, member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Wang Mingfu, former bodyguard of Chairman Mao Zedong. Influenced by his family environment and immersed in it from childhood, Chen Jianguo developed a profound passion for calligraphy early on. He diligently studied classical calligraphic models under family instruction, practicing tirelessly for decades without slackening. Only through such perseverance has he gained the mastery to freely wield his brush with grandeur. As the master once said, those endowed by heaven with exceptional talent are rare; those who persist daily in practice are many. The skill in one's hands and the techniques of ink and brush all require tireless dedication and gradual accumulation over time. The essence of wild cursive lies in its "wildness"—it disregards the meticulousness or flaws of individual characters or strokes; the brush is strong and vigorous, radiating momentum. Amid dramatic rises and falls, it reveals a magnificent spirit. Yet art expresses emotion, and the state of one's life determines the state of one's art. Chen Jianguo is naturally generous, proud, and unrestrained; among seal script, clerical script, cursive, running, and regular scripts, he is particularly devoted to wild cursive, this "dynamic" art form. Writing carries the Dao, expressing emotion; ink is rich and full, nourishing life. Only through unrestrained nature can one freely splash ink and wield the brush. The master tirelessly pursues the essence of art, roaming through the sea of artistic expression, battling the waves of ink, infusing emotion into wild cursive, dancing with ink in unrestrained passion.
When character is noble, the brush bears divine inspiration; when talent is abundant, the mind embraces all things. Calligraphy is an art, yet not a solitary one. It encompasses the myriad phenomena of the world, integrating them into ink and brush, and only through inner insight can emotion arise from the brush and characters carry elegant resonance. In addition to practicing calligraphy, Chen Jianguo also explores classical Chinese literature, poetry, couplets, and rhapsodies, finding joy in traditional arts such as music, dance, opera, and the majestic drumming of Weifeng gongs. He is truly a multi-talented individual. In his practice, various disciplines interweave, permeate, and inspire one another, allowing their essence to converge. Literati and scholars share refined tastes; ink and brush spread widely through the ages.
In recent years, holding his silver-tipped brush, Chen Jianguo, within the confines of a small space, manifests the grandeur of calligraphy as well as his free-spirited personality. Ink spreads with fragrance; in the alternating shades of darkness and light and the flowing, turning lines, the master will surely forge a glorious path in the art of ink.
