Zhang Hongwei
Personal Profile
Zhang Hongwei, male, courtesy name Chunfei, born in March 1962, master of Yiqing Studio, is a renowned Chinese calligrapher. He is currently a member of the National Federation of Famous Artists and Calligraphers, a member of the Shanxi Branch of the China Folk Literature and Art Association, a academician of the Fu Shan Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, a academician of the Chinese Buddhist Cultural Art Academy, deputy director of the Taiyuan Branch of the Liu Bingsen Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, and a member of the Shanxi Hard-Pen Calligraphy Association.
Since childhood, he has been deeply passionate about calligraphy art. For decades, he has persistently practiced without interruption, extensively studying ancient and modern calligraphy treatises and mastering both soft-brush and hard-pen techniques. His regular script draws inspiration from Ouyang Xun, Liu Gongquan, and Zhao Mengfu; his clerical script follows the styles of the Zhang Qian Stele and the Cao Quan Stele; his running script explores the works of Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Mi Fu, and Wang Duo; his cursive script is rooted in the Shupu and Zixu Tie. He believes that calligraphy expresses the inner voice, characters are the drawings of the heart, and when inspiration strikes, the mind and brush become one. He pursues solid foundational skills and profound knowledge. His devotion to calligraphy is not merely casual interest, but a heartfelt, sincere, and fervent love—he regards calligraphy as an essential part of his career and life. During nights or holidays, he locks himself in his small studio, immersed in the charm of ink and brushwork, often forgetting to eat or sleep. Among all scripts, he excels most in regular script and running-cursive, particularly renowned for his large-character inscriptions and small regular script. His calligraphy, while grounded in tradition, integrates his personal insights and immense dedication. His regular script and running-cursive works are fresh and elegant; his large-character inscriptions are robust and vigorous. Every stroke exudes sincerity, simplicity, grace, and beauty, radiating a rich scholarly aura.
Through years of tireless and diligent effort, he has gradually developed his own distinctive artistic style—concise, refined, clear, and graceful—which has earned recognition from many renowned experts domestically. Numerous of his works have been collected by professional institutions and calligraphy enthusiasts both within and outside China.
