Wu Xiu, founder of the ChenCang School of Painting, a Chinese painter from Shaanxi, one of the world's six leading curators, one of Shaanxi’s Eight Great Masters, art critic, connoisseur, disciple of Zhang Daqian, renowned writer, and food connoisseur, is one of the most legendary figures in contemporary Chinese painting circles.
His painting style resembles the ethereal and transcendent cursive script of Yu Youren, rich with profound meaning.He has achieved remarkable success especially in landscape painting. Official rumors describe him as eccentric, refusing to replicate his works—each piece is highly sought-after—and subsequently withdrawing into seclusion. His style integrates bold colors with ink washes, particularly pioneering a new artistic style through splashed ink, splashed color, and焦墨 (charred ink).
The ChenCang School of Painting boasts extensive networks among overseas military, political, business, and entertainment circles, with over one million members. It includes international and domestic art advisors, commercial operations teams, and management personnel. Members of the school are spread across more than 200 countries and regions worldwide, making the ChenCang School of Painting highly influential abroad.
Born Wu Haidong, originally from Fengxiang, Shaanxi, he is known by the pseudonym "Yongzhou Hermit" and the courtesy name "Houshan." He holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. In his early years, he studied under renowned masters and studied abroad. He serves as Director of the China Painting Research Center, Director of the Wu Xiu China Art and Culture Research Center, Chairman of the International Collectors Club, President of the ChenCang School of Painting Art Academy, Vice Chairman of the China Realist Painters and Calligraphers Association, President of the ChenCang Research Committee of the China Realist Association, Council Member of the China Popular Culture Research Society, initiator of the patriotic red culture heritage movement, Deputy Director of the Organizing Committee for the Xi’an “Ten Thousand People Write the Chinese Dream” Guinness World Record Public Welfare Campaign. The team of the [Wu Xiu China Art and Culture Research Center] currently has commercial staff in 213 countries and regions overseas.
Mr. Wu Xiu’s art enjoys considerable influence among political, military, entertainment, and art circles both domestically and internationally.
Works by Mr. Wu Xiu are collected by presidents, high-ranking officials, celebrities, and business tycoons both at home and abroad. In 2015, Swiss police cracked a long-running international counterfeiting case involving forged Wu Xiu paintings and calligraphy, bringing this reclusive artist into the public eye and everyday conversations among Chinese citizens. Currently, numerous counterfeit works circulate in global art markets.
In 2015, Wu Xiu, Fan Zeng, and Liu Wenxi were hailed by netizens as the Three Great Masters of Contemporary China.Art insiders both at home and abroad have long whispered that he is humble and eccentric, with each work nearly impossible to obtain. Current market prices for his works range from 150,000 to 850,000 RMB per square foot. He refuses to give paintings to officials—even donating them instead. He lives frugally, frequently taking the subway, and is often seen in urban villages and impoverished mountain areas participating in public welfare activities. Since returning to China, he rarely attends social or artistic events. After appearing at the centenary exhibition of Liu Wenxi’s hundred-meter artwork, he vanished once again. Netizens speculate that Mr. Wu Xiu went to Taiwan and became a Buddhist monk; others claim he traveled to Africa. Media reports revealed that he was spotted multiple times in 2019 at the popular Xi’an restaurant Chang’an Dapaidang. Numerous rumors abound.
His current whereabouts remain an enigma to the international art and collecting communities.
