Jia Caihong, female, Han ethnicity, born in June 1979 in Zhouwan Town, Wuqi County, Shaanxi Province, with a college diploma. She is currently a municipal-level representative inheritor of Wuqi paper-cutting, a Level II Fine Art Master of Shaanxi Folk Paper-Cutting, a Master of Yan'an Fabric Collage Art, a member of the Paper-Cutting Art Committee of the Chinese Culture Promotion Association, a member of the Paper-Cutting Committee of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, a Standing Director of the Shaanxi Paper-Cutting Society, a member of the Shaanxi Women's Handicraft Association, a Director of the Yan'an Women's Handicraft Association, and a member of the Wuqi Folk Artists Association. She served as the first Chairperson of the Women's Federation of the Wuqi Paper-Cutting Association and is currently the President of the Wuqi Paper-Cutting Association.
Since childhood, she has been fond of cutting window decorations, beginning at the age of eight to learn paper-cutting from her grandmother, maternal grandmother, and mother, Gao Fenglan. Her works are innovatively conceived, uniquely styled, simple and profound, delicate yet powerful, fully embodying the cultural characteristics of Wuqi in northern Shaanxi, skillfully blending traditional folk culture with contemporary life. Her paper-cutting pieces such as “Monkey Playing the Pipa,” “Snake Coiling Rabbit,” and “Twelve Zodiac Animals” closely resemble the artistic features of Han Dynasty carvings unearthed in northern Shaanxi and are regarded by experts as totem patterns from the Longshan Culture period.
Her works have won numerous awards both within and outside Shaanxi Province; she has successively received gold awards in the “1999 Chinese ‘Zijinghua Cup’,” the Exhibition of Folk Art for the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China, and the First “New Century Cup” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition; she was awarded the title of “International Gold Medal Artist of the ‘Yangtze Soul’” by the International Federation of Art and Culture at the “Yangtze Soul” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition; in the same year, she was invited to participate in the national art exhibition “Great Monument” held in Beijing; her paper-cutting work “Hundred Cats” was collected by the Provincial Cultural Center and exhibited in South Korea, receiving high praise from the art community. On October 15, 2016, she was invited to perform live paper-cutting at the opening ceremony of the “11th China Arts Festival” held at the Yan’an Grand Theatre. In December 2016, she was invited by the China Paper-Cutting Museum at the Shanghai World Intangible Cultural Heritage City to participate in the “Exhibition of Works by China’s Top Ten Renowned Female Paper-Cutting Artists.” In the same month, she performed live paper-cutting at the “2017 National Culture, Science, Technology, and Health ‘Three Goes to the Countryside’ Shaanxi and Yan’an Central Demonstration Event” held at Wuqi Long March Square. Her paper-cutting works “Lion Dance” and “Wuqi Window Decorations” won silver awards in the “2017 China Western Paper-Cutting Competition” and the “Tongguan Cup” National Paper-Cutting Competition, respectively. Her works “Baby Belly Band” and “Northern Shaanxi Cave Dwelling Window Decorations” were selected for the national paper-cutting exhibition “Unbreakable Hometown Nostalgia,” hosted by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and she was also invited to attend the opening ceremony on October 25, 2017, at the World Art Museum of the China Millennium Monument in Beijing.
In November 2016, she founded the Wuqi Paper-Cutting Association. On October 14, 2017, she welcomed a delegation led by Mr. Ji Guanguang, a Chinese-American, Chairman of the Pittsburgh Chinese Culture Center, Dean of the Pittsburgh Chinese Culture and Language Academy, and Director of the China Overseas Exchange Association, who visited and exchanged ideas on the preservation of folk traditional culture; they highly praised the protection and development of Wuqi paper-cutting. In December 2018, a delegation led by Wang Weiguo, Director of the Reform Office of the All-China Women’s Federation and Executive Deputy Director of the State Council’s Women and Children Work Committee, inspected and guided the Wuqi Paper-Cutting Association, fully affirming and commending its successful experience in skills training and leading women to achieve poverty alleviation and prosperity. During the 2020 epidemic, her family created paper-cutting works themed on epidemic prevention and control and donated them to Wuhan’s Leishenshan and Huoshenshan Hospitals on March 28; their virtuous and positive actions received widespread praise and media coverage.
No effort goes unrewarded. To inherit and promote the paper-cutting tradition of Wuqi in northern Shaanxi, she organized and established the Wuqi Paper-Cutting Association, and her words and deeds have earned recognition from all sectors of society. She has been featured in the book “Portraits of Wuqi People,” consecutively awarded the title of “Top Ten Artisans” for two years, and officially designated as a municipal-level representative inheritor of Wuqi paper-cutting. In 2017, she was honored by the Yan’an Municipal Party Committee and Yan’an Municipal People’s Government with the title of “Civilized Family of Yan’an.” In 2018, she was named one of the “Most Beautiful Families of the Sacred Land.” In February 2019, she was honored as a “Model of Yan’an.” In December 2020, she received the titles of “Shaanxi’s Second Civilized Family” and “Shaanxi’s Five Good Family.”
