Personal Profile
Geng Cheng, style name Xisheng, art name Chachan, is a Chinese charcoal drawing artist. Born in March 1978 in a remote village in Weifang, Shandong Province.
During an elementary school art class, a frail boy was carefully examining the assignment booklet just handed back by the teacher. The assignment was a desk lamp he had drawn in the previous class using a borrowed half-used piece of charcoal; the teacher had given it a score of 95 out of 100. At that moment, his greatest wish was to own his own piece of charcoal.
Later, the teenager studied sketching and watercolor painting. Subsequently, he worked the land, took on manual labor, ran a small shop, endured wind and rain, witnessed human warmth and coldness, experienced the bitterness of life, and encountered joy and sorrow, partings and reunions. Fortunately, he eventually acquired his own piece of charcoal. From then until now, he has never parted with it—it has recorded justice and evil, ugliness and grace...
After years of dedication, he developed his unique artistic style—blending techniques from Western sketching with the compositional principles of traditional Chinese painting, seamlessly merging East and West into a harmonious whole.
Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself. To ensure every piece becomes a masterpiece, he devotes himself entirely to each work, regardless of time. Initially, it took him two or three hours to complete one painting; later, it required ten, even dozens of hours, and some works demanded months. Why does each painting take longer? Perhaps because he observes more and more details—the pace of creation constantly slips beyond control—but he never rushes. He continues until he himself is fully satisfied, striving to make each piece a unique, irreplaceable original. His published works include “Medical Reform,” “Around,” “Yu River,” “Ban Men,” “A Shi Ma,” among others. Next, he will陆续 release “Return,” “Run Forward,” “Keep Running,”… and many more outstanding works.
He excels in depicting fish, shrimp, and cicada series, many of which have been collected by elites across society. He hopes his artworks will form meaningful connections with more outstanding individuals.
He will devote his entire life to pursuing a simple, humble existence, joining others in protecting the environment and revering nature.
