Liu Zequan, pen name Xiaoquan, styled Kuzhou, Canglang Ke, Sandu Daoren, Taoyuan Hermit
Born in May 1958 in Qingdao, Shandong, he is the tenth-generation descendant of Liu Yong, a renowned Qing Dynasty chancellor and calligrapher.
He serves as Chairman of the Qingdao Calligraphy and Painting Alliance, President of Qingdao Taoyuan Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Vice President of the Laoshan Taoist Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Vice President of Qingdao Qilu Ink Painting Research Institute, Vice President of Qingdao Mass Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Vice Chairman of the World Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association Qingdao Branch, President of the World Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association Qingdao Calligraphy and Painting Academy, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong International Chinese Calligraphers Association, Council Member of the China Calligraphy and Fine Arts Association, Member of the China Arts and Crafts Association, Member of the China Calligraphers Association, Member of the China Collectors Association, Member of the Shandong Calligraphers Association, Guest Professor at the Oriental Art Research Institute, and Special Correspondent for the "Art China Newspaper." He received his initial calligraphy training from his father, and later studied under masters Tong Ying, Jiang Zisheng, Xiu De, Wang Cheng, and Zhang Hai.
He began studying regular script with the Liu style, seeking its solemn and vigorous strength; later practiced Ouyang Xun and Chu Suiliang styles to absorb their elegant and graceful forms; also studied the Zhang Menglong Stele and Zheng Wen Gong Stele for their ancient and powerful brushwork. For running script, he started with the Lan Ting Xu and Sheng Jiao Xu, then extensively practiced famous works. For clerical script, he began with the Cao Quan Stele and Shi Chen Stele, later studied the Zhang Qian Stele. For seal script, he studied the Stone Drum Script, Li Si, and Deng Shiru. For cursive script, he studied Sun Guoting and Huaisu’s works. On this foundation, he further enriched his inner strength by drawing nourishment from literature, fine arts, and music. His regular, running, clerical, seal, and cursive scripts are all executed with both spirit and form, exhibiting a unique style. While broadly absorbing the essence of ancient calligraphy, he also diligently studied contemporary masters’ works, frequently traveling nationwide to seek mentors, visit peers, and tour scenic sites to gather diverse influences. Especially favored by renowned calligraphers Wang Cheng and Zhang Hai, he pursued advanced studies at the Henan Calligraphy Graduate Institute and graduated with outstanding results, thus elevating his calligraphy to a new level. In 1983, his work “Cloud-capped mountains stretch far, rivers flow vast; the master’s virtue stands as high as mountains, as enduring as waters” won First Prize in the “First Qingdao Calligraphy and Seal Carving Art Competition.” In 1987, he received an Excellence Award in the “Ink Garden Blossoms” National Calligraphy Competition. In 1988, he received an Excellence Award in the “Lengshui Cup” National Calligraphy Competition. In 1996, he won the Golden Stone Award in the “Qindao Cup” National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Competition. In 1998, he was selected for the “Huaxia Securities Cup” National Calligraphy Exhibition.
In June 1999, his work “Elegant zither plays snow-white melodies, free brush soars toward azure skies” won the Bronze Award in the “International Golden Goose Calligraphy and Painting Competition.” His work “Flowers bloom beautifully, moon shines roundly” won the Innovation Award in the “National Folk Arts and Crafts Calligraphy Exhibition Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the PRC and the Return of Macau.” In July, his work “Carrying zither, watching cranes depart; resting on stone, awaiting clouds’ return” won First Prize in the “Second Fine Arts and Calligraphy Exhibition of Central-Southern Ethnic Artists Association Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the PRC and Macau’s Return to the Motherland,” and also won the Bronze Award in the “First Olympic Cup International Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition.” His work “Green mountains never age, clear waters flow forever” won Third Prize in the “Yishui Cup” Calligraphy and Seal Carving Competition. In 1999, he was honored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles as a “Cross-Strait Virtuous and Talented Artist.” In August, the Contemporary Artist Qualification Certification Committee awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award in Oriental Art. In March 2000, his work “Drinking morning dew at Queen Mother’s Pool...” won the Premium First Prize in the 21st Century “Huaxia Shenzhou Cup” Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition.
