Vice Director and Senior Researcher of the Arts and Crafts Committee at Shandong Hongzheng Traditional Culture Research Institute.
Director of the Shandong Provincial Arts and Crafts Association,

Liu Zhenlan has been passionate about embroidery since childhood. At the age of 17, she joined a township enterprise and went to Penglai City for training in textile manufacturing and embroidery. During her training, many of her works received praise and commendation from instructors. She has devoted herself to this craft for decades. Over these years, she learned numerous exquisite embroidery techniques from veteran artisans and traveled multiple times to Suzhou to further her studies at the Shen Shou Embroidery Research Institute. By absorbing diverse influences and persistently conducting independent research, she has significantly elevated the quality of her embroidery works, many of which have become masterpieces. In recent years, through persistent innovation, she successfully applied human hair embroidery onto silk, making her works more vivid and lifelike. This innovation also gave birth to hair embroidery as a new art form within the Lu embroidery tradition, laying a foundation for the continuous development of Lu embroidery craftsmanship.
“Autumn Colors on the Queshan and Huashan Mountains” (Hair Embroidery) won the Silver Award at the 8th China (Shandong) Arts and Crafts Expo in 2016. “Soaring Wings Toward the Sky” won the Gold Award at the 8th China (Shandong) Arts and Crafts Expo in 2016. “Cold Sparrows” won the Gold Award in the Lu Embroidery category at the 4th China Intangible Cultural Heritage Expo (Shandong Division) in 2016. “Two Steeds” (Hair Embroidery) won the “Shenlong Cup” Provincial Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Gold Award at the 9th China (Shandong) Arts and Crafts Expo in 2017. “Willow and Cicada” (Hair Embroidery) won the “Shenlong Cup” Provincial Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Bronze Award at the 9th China (Shandong) Arts and Crafts Expo. “Eight Steeds” won the Bronze Award at the 2017 Shandong Folk Art Expo. In 2017, she won the First Prize in Embroidery at the “Remain True to Our Original Aspiration and Create Brilliant Achievements Together” Art Competition commemorating the 123rd anniversary of Mao Zedong’s birth. “Eight Steeds in Prosperous Times” (Hair Embroidery) won the “Liangzi Black Pottery Cup” Shandong Provincial Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Gold Award at the 10th China (Shandong) Arts and Crafts Expo in 2018. “Ink-Splashed Immortal” (Hair Embroidery) won the “Liangzi Black Pottery Cup” Shandong Provincial Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Silver Award at the 10th China (Shandong) Arts and Crafts Expo in 2018. In 2018, she won First Prize in the Embroidery Category at the Shandong Division Selection Competition of the 5th Intangible Cultural Heritage Expo. In 2018, the hair embroidery work “Master Baishi and Shrimp” won the Excellence Award at the 19th China Master Craftsmen Works and Handicraft Masterpieces Expo under the “Baihua Cup” China Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Awards.
I have loved the craft of embroidery since childhood—for over 30 years now. Embroidery has profoundly influenced my character and life, instilling in me perseverance and the determination to persist steadfastly in everything I do. “Heaven rewards diligence”—this saying perfectly describes my journey in embroidery. Without perseverance and unwavering dedication, I would not have achieved what I have today. For me, embroidery has added another radiant dimension to my life. Since I am deeply passionate about the art of Lu embroidery, I will resolutely continue on this path. Every art form is the product of artisans’ inner vision and contemplation. Only through continuous reflection and courageous innovation can our ancient arts continue to flourish and shine. The road of art is filled with both hardships and tranquility—yet as long as one dedicates their heart to it, there will always be rewards.
