Personal Profile

Sun Helong, born in 1956 in Shandong Tai’an. He received traditional Chinese cultural education in his early years. Since the reform and opening-up, he has devoted himself to the creation and research of arts and crafts; his woodcut and printmaking works have spread to many countries in Europe and America. After turning 60, Sun Zhongyun styled himself “Studio of Unretiring Retirement,” daring to innovate and pioneering a new trend of exploring both Chinese and Western painting. In his works, some are rendered with delicate, understated brushstrokes, others with bold, vivid colors—seemingly lawless yet governed by profound principles. Whenever copying ancient masterpieces or practicing calligraphy, he always exerts his utmost effort and concentration. For forty years without interruption, his aged brush has never ceased. In recent years, his paintings frequently appear in public, each masterpiece brimming with endless artistic meaning, and his works have gradually become sought-after treasures among many friends.
