Dagang, whose real name is Wu Gang, also known as Dagangzi, is a calligrapher and painter. He holds the artistic names “Fulai Mountain Hermit,” “Sanqian Cottage,” and “Zexin Hall Master,” and currently resides beneath Fulai Mountain in Yantai. Born in the year of Renzi, he was influenced by his family from an early age and developed a fondness for painting. His maternal great-grandfather was an editor during the late Qing Dynasty, and his family imposed a strict cultural education. In his spare time, he enjoyed copying figures and warhorses from illustrated storybooks, and deeply admired heroic figures such as Yue Fei and Guan Yu, meticulously replicating their portraits. Due to the limitations of the era, his practice of calligraphy and painting was interrupted multiple times during his youth—an enduring regret. In calligraphy, he first studied Liu Gongquan, later practicing Yan Zhenqing, and also copied the Lique Stele, Chu Suiliang’s Yin Fu Jing, and the Yan Ta Sheng Jiao Xu.In painting, he initially learned from Gong Xian, then studied Jianjiang Monk, followed by Bada Shanren and Shitao, occasionally imitating Qi Baishi. He pursues rigorous scholarship and aspires to the ancient aesthetic, having traveled dozens of times to major museums, art galleries, and renowned painting academies to research ancient masters and techniques. In his spare time, he enjoys collecting cultural artifacts, works by famous artists, fine jades, and exchanges with renowned masters.
Currently, he is a member of the Shandong Yantai Calligraphers Association and Yantai Artists Association, Vice President of the Yantai Changlong Painting Academy, painter at Changlong Painting Academy, and Vice President of the Pan Bingheng Jade Art Research Association.
