Hu Xuntao
Personal Profile
Hu Xuntao—hailing from Jining, Shandong, has studied numerous famous calligraphy models since childhood, thoroughly mastering the styles of Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, and Zhao Mengfu, excelling in regular, cursive, clerical, and seal scripts. With a profound understanding of traditional culture, he adheres to classical methods while boldly innovating, particularly passionate about clerical script. He has extensively studied renowned steles and rubbings, absorbing the essence of clerical script throughout history. His brushwork combines smoothness and evenness, featuring the characteristic "silkworm head and swallow tail," tight inside and loose outside, with expressive and well-proportioned strokes, dots and lines varying in thickness and solidity. His works are dignified yet elegant, strong yet graceful, embodying both the spirit of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi and the structural strength of Yan and Liu. His brush techniques are powerful in control, freely expansive and contracting, smoothly extended, with harmonious contrast of ink density, presenting a solemn, generous appearance, bold in momentum yet lively and ethereal. The subtle tremors and pauses resemble tadpoles wriggling in water—thus earning praise from his mentor Zhang Huichen, who named his unique style "Ke Dou Li" (Tadpole Clerical), also known as "Ge Da Li" (Knot Clerical). In his calligraphic creations, he skillfully manipulates brush techniques with ease, sincerely pursuing artistic perfection and establishing his own distinctive calligraphic style. His works have been collected by individuals and institutions in Taiwan, Beijing, Hebei, Xinjiang, Guangdong, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan, Chongqing, and elsewhere. To grasp the true essence of calligraphy art, he has paid repeated homage to masters such as Wei Bei from Mr. Wei Jingshan, Mao-style calligraphy from Mr. Zhang Dezhong, Tian-style regular script from Mr. Zhu Changhu, oracle bone script from Mr. Jia Jianhong, clerical script from Mr. Guan Mingchang, and running script from Mr. Guo Zongquan, drawing on their respective strengths. He further apprenticed under calligraphy grandmasters Zhang Huichen and Lü Jiande. He has successively joined and served as a member of the China Hard Pen Calligraphers Association, a member of the Jining Youth Calligraphers Association, Vice Chairman of the Jining Calligraphers and Painters Association Economic Development Zone Branch, member of the Jining Clerical Script Professional Committee, specially appointed creation calligrapher at the Confucius Academy of Painting and Calligraphy (Qufu), member of the China Online Calligraphy Alliance, committee member of the Cross-Strait Painting and Calligraphy Research Association for Cultural Exchange, Vice Dean of Tian Yingzhang’s Jining Academy, council member of Jining Changlexuan Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, member of the Jining Musicians Association Guqin Professional Committee, and one of the Dan-calligraphers at Jining Anju Ganlu Temple.
