Zhu Baohua
Personal Profile
Zhu Baohua, member of the Shandong Provincial Artists Association. Born in 1954 into a scholarly family in Gaotang County, Shandong Province. His maternal grandfather, Li Yingcai (1882–1971), a Qing Dynasty imperial examination laureate, once authored the historical and geographical volumes of the Republican-era “Gaotang County Annals.” Li Yingcai was the elder cousin of Master Li Kuchan; thus, Zhu’s family possessed a rich collection of calligraphy and paintings. Influenced by his family environment, Zhu Baohua developed a deep love for calligraphy and painting since childhood. As a child, he drew on elementary school wall newspapers; during middle school, he was the chief artist for various exhibitions. He successively worked in labor unions, propaganda, and education (serving as Party Committee Secretary, Director of Education, Party Secretary and Principal of Workers’ School, among other positions). For nearly forty years, he has diligently studied and practiced painting and calligraphy: as early as the 1970s, his traditional Chinese paintings were exhibited at provincial, regional, and county levels; in 1984, he published his first cartoon in the Economic Daily. In 1985, he was admitted to Liaocheng Education College, studying full-time in Chinese Language and Literature, while simultaneously enrolling in the Correspondence School of Chinese Painting jointly operated by China Academy of Art (formerly Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts) and CCTV, earning a certificate of “Outstanding Student” signed by President Li Binghong. In 1990, he founded the “Hard Pen Calligraphers Gaotang Fellowship”; with support from Mr. Liu Yi and Mr. Quan Xijun of the China Calligraphers Association and China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper, he organized the “New Talent Cup” National Hard Pen Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition and Competition, attracting widespread participation and becoming a major artistic event of the time. He also served as chief editor and published the “Compendium of Chinese Hard Pen Calligraphy and Painting Talents.” In 1997, he traveled with the Shandong Calligraphy and Painting Art Exchange Delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Hong Kong and Macao regions for exhibitions, returning home with honors. Zhu Baohua’s freehand-style flower-and-bird paintings inherit Master Li Kuchan’s brushwork—ancient, lush, and vigorous; his landscapes inherit the authentic teachings of his mentor, Master Sun Ying (Da Shi), majestic and grand in momentum. His works have been awarded numerous prizes in dozens of domestic and international exhibitions and published in various newspapers and magazines. His biography and works have been included in more than ten major reference books, such as “Who’s Who in the World,” “Dictionary of Chinese Literary and Art Figures,” “Exhibition of Famous Chinese Painters and Their Works,” and “Collection of Works by China’s Leading Painters.” He is currently rated as a Senior Artist, Council Member of the China National Painters Association, Council Member of the China Calligraphy and Painting Association, Council Member (and Disciple) of the Sun Da Shi Art Research Society, Vice Chairman of the Gaotang County Artists Association, Council Member of the Liaocheng City Artists Association, and Member of the Sixth and Seventh Sessions of the Gaotang County CPPCC (Committee of Culture and History). Zhu Baohua excels both morally and artistically: in 1991, he was awarded the title of “Advanced Cultural Worker” by the Liaocheng Regional Committee. In 1993, his act of rescuing and adopting abandoned children was reported by dozens of news media outlets, including Xinhua News Agency and CCTV.
