Personal Profile
Shi Qigan, male, born in 1962, graduated from the Naval University of Engineering and currently works in a dyeing and finishing factory. During his military service, he received years of foundational guidance from the renowned calligrapher and painter Sheng Haode, which led him into the field of calligraphy and painting. Later, he studied under the famous calligraphers Xiu De and Dong Qishui, practicing calligraphy diligently by day and reflecting deeply by night, gradually developing his own distinctive style. His brushwork is swift and powerful, exuding a bold and commanding aura as if sweeping away thousands of troops—none can rival him. Viewing his calligraphy evokes a refreshing sensation, like autumn winds sweeping fallen leaves, clearing away all gloom from the heart. In addition to his exceptional calligraphy, Shi Qigan’s paintings are also praiseworthy. His freehand-style flower-and-bird paintings are full of lively charm; the ordinary flowers, grasses, insects, and fish he depicts brim with everyday vitality. His painting style contrasts sharply with his calligraphy: while his calligraphy is forceful and vigorous, his paintings are gentle and approachable—yet they never lack brushwork and ink essence. The “bone method” among the Six Principles of Chinese painting essentially means infusing brushstrokes with calligraphic spirit; without such brushwork and bone structure, a painting loses its artistic appeal. Occasionally, Shi Qigan also creates landscape paintings, primarily in classical style, adhering strictly to traditional techniques in outlining, texturing, staining, and dotting, whether in light green-blue or light reddish-brown tones—though his achievements in landscape painting are somewhat less prominent than in calligraphy and flower-and-bird subjects. Stones should be rendered like “flying white” strokes, trees like wrapped cords; to paint bamboo well, one must master the “Eight Principles” of brushwork.        Currently, he is a member of the China Hard Pen Calligraphy Association, holds National Level 3 Calligraphy Certification, is a Senior Registered Teacher of Chinese Hard Pen Calligraphy, a council member of the China Oriental Giant Dragon Calligraphers and Painters Research Association, and a member of the World Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association.
