 Personal Profile

Zhao Weidong, from Zibo, Shandong, styled Xiuyang, also known as Zheng Shuimoren and Danqing Zhengxiren. Born in 1958, with a high school education, he worked for twenty years as a movie projectionist and painted movie posters; however, his passion for calligraphy and painting has always remained in his heart. He was initially inspired by his junior high school Chinese teacher, Mr. Zhang Zhengqian (currently a National First-Class Calligrapher), and has loved calligraphy and painting since childhood, self-studying and researching diligently. It was Mr. Zhang who gradually led him into the realm of calligraphy and painting. Over many years, he has diligently navigated the sea of ink, galloping freely across canvases—though achieving no great fame, he has nonetheless gained modest accomplishments. He has participated in various calligraphy and painting activities organized by the Zibo City Film Company, district film companies, and Zhangdian Cultural Bureau. His work won first prize at the 1980 Zhangdian District Peasant Painting Exhibition and first prize at the 1981 Lantern Slide Performance organized by the film company. In early 2018, he traveled to Shijiazhuang to further study hard-pen calligraphy. He became a disciple of Mr. Qi Xinmin, a national master of freehand brushwork painting (member of the China Artists Association, guest professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, tutor at Tsinghua University’s Advanced Chinese Painting Research Class, and National First-Class Artist). In 2019, he went to Beijing to further his studies at Tsinghua University’s Advanced Chinese Painting Research Class under Qi Xinmin’s studio. He specializes in freehand ink Chinese flower-and-bird painting.

In 2018, his works such as [Morning Glory] were personally collected by the South Korean Embassy in China.

His Chinese painting [Lotus Pond in Summer Coolness] was personally collected by international economic organization friends.

In 2018, he was recognized as: A Leading Figure in Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Art and a Model Figure in Calligraphy and Painting.

In 2018, his work (Lotus Pond Under Moonlight) for the “Beautiful Zibo” exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of reform and opening-up received an Outstanding Art Award certificate.
