Calligrapher Gao Feng
Personal Profile
Gao Feng, styled Dashi, was born in 1960 in Tancheng County, Shandong. He is a member of the Shandong Calligraphers Association and a director of the Linyi Calligraphers Association.       Since childhood, he has been fond of doodling and has thoroughly studied the calligraphic models of Yan, Liu, Zhao, and the Two Wangs. Later, he traced back to inscriptions, Qin seal script, Han clerical script, and Wei steles, widely absorbing and selectively integrating various styles. In cursive and running scripts, he studied masters such as Mi Fu, Huang Shanvalley, Zhang Xu, Huai Su, and Wang Duo, and received personal instruction from the contemporary master Ms. Zhou Huibin, greatly benefiting from her guidance. For decades, he has never ceased practicing calligraphy, indifferent to empty titles, pursuing ultimate emptiness and steadfast tranquility.
In 1992, he won first prize in the National Land System Calligraphy Exhibition; in 2005, he received third prize at the Linyi International Calligraphy Festival. His works have been collected by institutions such as the Ministry of Land and Resources, the People’s Congress of Qinghai Province, the Banking Regulatory Bureau of Shaanxi Province, the Construction Bank of Xi’an, and the CPPCC of Linyi City, as well as by social friends. His works have also been praised and collected by Chinese communities and friends in the United States, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. In recent years, after retiring from the cultural sector, he has immersed himself in nature, wandering beyond worldly concerns, visiting ancient temples and famous steles, befriending renowned artists across regions, and developing a calligraphic style that is vigorous, dynamic, fluent, and brisk, with distinctive personal characteristics. He once composed a self-mocking poem revealing his aspirations:
Neither Buddhist nor Taoist, nor practicing Zen; neither belonging to any sect nor any association.
Drunk, I let ink express my inner thoughts; daring to wield the mighty brush upon plain paper.
