Reflections on Viewing Mr. Su Kuang’s “Eagle” Paintings South of Mount Tai:

Once, by chance, I read the seven-character regulated verse “Painted Eagle” by the great poet Du Fu, and was instantly captivated by the powerful brushwork and chilling vigor conveyed in the poem: upon a pure white sheet of Xuan paper, the depiction of a solitary, frosty eagle instantly evokes an overwhelming, awe-inspiring force. In the poetic imagery, the eagle, poised to strike, rises with wind and frost; its lazy solitude radiates a cold, solemn majesty, brimming with righteous vigor, naturally commanding and intimidating all evil in nature. It is the embodiment of a noble-minded scholar’s lonely inner world, and even more, a call for clarity and purity throughout the universe. Regrettably, at that time, I could only appreciate it through poetry and imagination, unable to witness the actual painting before Du Fu’s eyes. Today, upon viewing several “Eagle” paintings by Mr. Su Kuang, I instantly rediscovered the long-missed regal aura and solemn charm of the eagle depicted in Du Fu’s verses! Thus, I have paired Du Fu’s poem with Mr. Su’s paintings, inviting everyone to savor together the artistic unity of poetry and painting through their subtle resonance. I casually jotted down a few reflections, serving as my inscription for Mr. Su Kuang’s eagle paintings.   Attached: Du Fu’s “Painted Eagle”   On plain silk, wind and frost arise; the painted eagle stands uniquely grand.   Its body crouches ready to pounce on cunning hares; its sidelong gaze resembles a worried foreigner.   The silk tether gleams invitingly to be untied; from the pillar, the eagle seems ready to be summoned.

When will it strike down ordinary birds, scattering feathers and blood across the wild plain?
