Xu Xuetao, pseudonym: Taoguang Garden Master, studio name: Duyun Pavilion, born in 1956, originally from Shandong Linqing.
Currently serves as: Painter at the Training Center of the China Artists Association, Deputy Secretary-General of the Beijing Fan Art Association, Member of the China Theatre Association, Director of the Chinese Tan School Art Promotion Association, Special Appointed Painter of China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper, Director of the Shandong Provincial Calligraphy and Painting Society, Deputy Director of Ink Painting Committee of Shandong Cartoonists Association,Vice Chairman of Linqing Municipal Artists Association, and Member of Linqing Municipal Committee of CPPCC. Joined the Linqing Municipal Peking Opera Troupe in 1970. In 1984, became a disciple of the renowned Peking Opera performing artist Mr. Tan Yuanshou. Passionate about calligraphy and painting for over thirty years, he uses ink and brush to vividly portray the myriad characters of the stage — Sheng, Dan, Jing, Chou — within the confines of his scrolls. His ink-wash theatrical figure paintings follow the teachings of the celebrated theatrical figure painter Mr. Shi Shengchen. In 1989, upon strong recommendation from his mentor Tan Yuanshou, he became a disciple of the nationally renowned calligraphy doctoral supervisor Mr. Ouyang Zhongshi. He has also received long-term guidance from the ink-wash painters Mr. Zhou Sicong and Ms. Lu Chen, greatly benefiting from their instruction. Successfully held his solo exhibition of theatrical figure paintings at the Wang Xuetao Memorial Hall in Jinan Baotu Spring during the May Day holiday in 2000, filling an artistic gap of this genre in Shandong Province. In 2002, during the first national Amateur Peking Opera Festival, he held the solo exhibition “Affection for the Pear Garden” — his works were selected for the cover and illustrations in “Contemporary Chinese Peking Opera Enthusiasts Encyclopedia,” published by Hong Kong Tianma Publishing House and edited by the China Theatre Association. He has won multiple awards in national calligraphy and painting competitions and has been included in various anthologies. Awards include: 2002 “Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the PLA” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition — Excellence Award “Jiahan Cup” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition organized by China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper — Bronze Award. 2005 “Third National Calligraphy and Painting Competition for Middle-aged and Elderly Artists” — Silver Award. 2005 “20th Anniversary of China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition — Silver Award. October 2008, “Olympic Journey: Ink-Wash China” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition — Highest Award (Grand Prize) October 2008, “Magical Anze” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition — Third Prize, and participated in the First Xunzi Culture and Art Festival. November 2008, “Commemorating the 110th Anniversary of Zhang Boju’s Birth” National Calligraphy and Painting Competition — Excellence Award in the National Treasure Exhibition. October 2009, “Longqiao Cup” National Four-panel Chinese Painting Competition (Figure Category) — Silver Award (Gold Award vacant) June 2010, exhibited in the “Entering the World Expo” National CPPCC Members’ Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition. October 2013, theatrical figure painting “Sheng Dan Jing Chou Bringing Auspiciousness” exhibited in the large-scale charity exhibition “Care and Responsibility: Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting Masters Aid Ya’an Earthquake Disaster Area,” organized by the Soong Ching Ling Foundation. August 2013, theatrical figure paintings exhibited in “Ink Charm of Water City: Linqing Fine Artworks Exhibition in Beijing,” displayed at the Chinese People's Revolutionary Military Museum! July 2014, participated in the 22nd Faculty and Student Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition of the Training Center of China Artists Association. In September of the same year, was invited to attend the launch ceremony of CCTV Calligraphy and Painting Channel’s “Painting Shanxi” and the live painting event with a hundred calligraphers and painters. January 2015, invited by Taiyuan Art Museum of Shanxi to hold the solo exhibition “Affection for the Pear Garden” — Xu Xuetao’s Theatrical Figure Paintings. October 2017, held a solo theatrical figure painting exhibition titled “Opera Entering Campus” in the hometown of master painter Wang Xuetao! Reported by China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper and CCTV Calligraphy and Painting Channel. July 28, 2018, accompanied the Beijing Fan Art Association to Taiyuan Art Museum, Shanxi, to participate in the First Shanxi Fan Calligraphy and Painting Art Exhibition and the Cultural Exchange Seminar among Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shanxi. August 9, 2018, four theatrical figure fan paintings (“Sheng Dan Jing Chou”) participated in the Third Fan Culture Exhibition “High Fan, Pure Breeze,” hosted by Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles. September 1, 2018, theatrical figure painting “Mencius’ Mother Moves Three Times” selected for the Second Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting by One Hundred Film and Television Celebrities. Invited to attend the opening ceremony held at Beijing Nationalities Cultural Palace! During the 2019 Dragon Boat Festival, participated in the First Beijing Fan Art and Culture Festival series of events! (Summer Palace) (Xicheng District Cultural Center) North (Beijing Foreign Studies University) Fan Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition and charity activities such as “Breeze in the Sleeve”!
