 Personal Profile
Xu Jianyi, styled Zi Yuan, and known as Shanren, was born in 1980 in Tancheng, Shandong. He studies calligraphy and seal carving, and also practices landscape painting. He is currently a member of the Chinese Large-Character Calligraphy Art Research Association, a member of the Shandong Calligraphers Association, a member of the Shandong Historical Society, and an executive director of the Linyi Wang Xizhi Research Association.
His calligraphy is rooted in the Mawangdui silk manuscripts and Han dynasty clerical script, while also studying the running and cursive scripts of the Two Wangs. His seal carving follows ancient masters, primarily focusing on Qin and Han dynasty seals. In his spare time from writing and carving, he amuses himself by studying painting through the芥子园 (Jieziyuan Painting Manual). Calligraphy ultimately expresses the emotions deep within a person’s heart; thus, joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness are all manifested in writing—Jianyi exemplifies this, embodying both boldness and simplicity. He has deeply studied traditional culture, and since calligraphy is closely linked with history and culture, all calligraphers inevitably seek their own path through copying ancient scrolls and steles. This undoubtedly endows him with profound historical and humanistic cultivation. His brushwork is refined and skillful, his technique rigorous and disciplined, his spirit tranquil and unhurried. His works are imbued with rich ink tones, mysterious and wordless transformations, revealing a pure expressive power. His brushstrokes convey thickness and strength; seemingly imperfect, they carry a profound historical weight and a hard, cold, sharp artistic visuality. Horizontal strokes slant outward, greeting with emotion; vertical strokes tilt gracefully, harmonious in leisure; his撇 (pie) strokes reveal innocence, his捺 (na) strokes contain childlike sincerity; his vertical strokes never sag in spirit, each dot and stroke reflecting his inner nature. Viewers simultaneously experience naivety and spontaneity, while also encountering visual beauty that is extraordinary, perilous, profound, and sublime. His calligraphic artistic style, beyond his innate talent, is above all a manifestation of boldness and vigor! His works have been exhibited multiple times at provincial and national exhibitions, and he once won the second prize in the Chinese Farmers’ Art Festival Calligraphy and Painting Competition.para-title
