Zhang Guofu (pen name: Langya Mountain Man), styled Yutian, also known as Zhuohan Xiangweng, Baishan, Langya Mountain Man, Wanderer of Central Hebei, Wanderer, and Master of Qimo Studio; pen name: Qiru, studio name: Qimo Studio. Born in June 1946 (official records mistakenly list 1948) in Hebei Baoding, he joined the army and was later transferred and settled in ancient Zhifu, Shandong Yantai. He is ethnically Manchu (household registration mistakenly lists Han), with ancestral roots in the region of White Mountains and Black Waters; his ancestors once followed the renowned Qing Dynasty military and political leader, Prince Dorgon, into the capital Beijing. Zhang Guofu has been passionately fond of calligraphy, painting, and literary arts since childhood. His life has been full of hardships and misfortunes—he attended school but barely learned to read or write, simultaneously serving as a nanny throughout his seven years of elementary education; he holds a junior college diploma from the Adult Higher Education Program of Shandong Trade Staff University (Class of 1989). He studied under the master of Chinese classics, Mr. Ba Gangpulibu, renowned poet, writer, calligrapher, and painting master Mr. Zhou Fumin, calligraphy educator Mr. Jia DunChao, and traditional Chinese painting educator Mr. Tan Hongbin. Currently, he is a member of the China National Painters Association and a painter; member of the Global Chinese Lyricists and Composers Association and lyricist; member of the Yantai Writers Association of China and writer.
After officially retiring in 2008 AD, he began learning computer skills and internet usage, since when he started writing family history, genealogy, personal history, and autobiographical accounts of his turbulent life. Two manuscripts, “My Mother” and “Zhang Guofu’s Memoir of Five Near-Death Experiences,” have been finalized. Since 2012, he has composed over a thousand poems currently being edited and compiled; among them, the lyrics for “Mother, My Dear Mother,” “Follow the Party to Fulfill Our Dreams,” and “I Love Langya Mountain” have been set to music by composers, performed and recorded by singers, and released as videos. The lyrics for “I Love Langya Mountain” won the Gold Award for Lyric Writing at the 2014 “Golden Voice” Global Chinese Grand Music Exhibition and Review.
In March 2014 AD, his traditional Chinese painting works were selected for inclusion in the China Post Collectible Commemorative Album.
In September 2014 AD, his traditional Chinese painting works were selected for the 2014 World Poetry and Calligraphy Exhibition and the National Touring Exhibition of Famous Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy, and Painting Works.
In 2016 AD, he was selected as a New Great Wall Artist.
In August 2017 AD, he was selected as a Chinese Art Master featured on international postage stamps; his traditional Chinese painting works were issued as postage stamps circulating in the United States, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
In August 2017 AD, he was selected for the AOBRAND List of Chinese Art Figures and nominated as a 2017 China Good Brand Influential Calligrapher and Painter.
From August 20, 2017, to August 20, 2018, he was appointed Art Director of Sotheby's Cultural and Art Development Center.
In September 2017 AD, he was included in “Encyclopedia of Calligraphers and Painters.”
In January 2018 AD, he was selected for “Tribute to the National ‘Two Sessions’ – 2018 Collection Art Network Top 100 Outstanding Artists.”
In November 2018 AD, he was included in “Yiyun Encyclopedia.”
In August 2019 AD, he was selected for “Glorious Seventy Years · Striving in the New Era – Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition by the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region Committee of the CPPCC.”
In July 2020 AD, he was selected as “Leading Figure in Contemporary Chinese Art.”
His works have been collected by numerous domestic and international collectors and enthusiasts of calligraphy and painting.
