Wei Zhigang, styled Laolian, owner of Hefeng Hall, is a contemporary accomplished painter who was deeply influenced by Fu Ershi and has a passionate love for traditional Chinese painting.He studied twice at the Shandong University of Arts—in 1985 and 2012—under the guidance of professors including Gao Yanjun.The ancient pomegranate garden spanning ten thousand mu in Yicheng, Shandong, has inspired his creativity. His pomegranate-themed artworks are fresh and elegant, profoundly influenced by Dr. Yin Shuyu, a renowned painter, embodying the artistic spirit of the Ming dynasty.He holds a special affection for lotus themes and excels in boneless colored lotus paintings. His lotus works have been exhibited numerous times and presented as national gifts, collected by the Austrian prince and princess, as well as the Archbishop of Vatican City.

Lotus in Freedom I have been a close friend of Brother Wei Zhigang for many years. At his request, I write these words to record some thoughts on his art. Wen Tao humbly offers this preface. Brother Wei has long devoted himself to painting by the shores of Weishan Lake. Facing the wind and contemplating the distance, whenever he feels an urge to transcend the mundane, he expresses it through his brushwork, finding joy in this path. Recently, viewing his latest works, I find mostly depictions of a single flower or leaf by stone or streamside. Though small in size, each piece embodies both principle and charm. By "principle," I mean his deep understanding of past masterpieces—every stroke rooted in tradition. By "charm," I refer to his clear expression of contemporary sentiment—each painting imbued with genuine feeling. In every lotus he paints, he avoids falling into old patterns. A single blossom lifts its head proudly, a solitary stem stands erect, transcending worldly concerns, evoking a sense of serene clarity. What is this clarity? It is the shimmering lake and mountains, the reflection of sky and clouds—everything experienced transformed into luminous emptiness. The artist captures the enduring vitality of the lotus; the viewer receives its ceaseless emotional resonance. Prosperity and decay exist only in a fleeting thought. Thought follows thought, wish follows wish! Thinking of life’s endless renewal, wishing for emotion that never fades. People say a painted lotus branch preserves beauty—but I see it as a heartfelt wish shared between us. The lotuses growing in Weishan Lake bloom with the seasons and fade in due time. But the lotuses painted by Brother Wei flourish according to the wisdom of the sage and the awakened heart! Lotuses may age, yet grow stronger with age. The lotus never ages—it exists freely in this world! May Brother Wei achieve ever-greater heights in his artistic journey!
