Personal Profile
Chen Yanbao, styled Shushen, was born in 1960 in Licheng, Jinan, Shandong—the hometown of the renowned poet Xin Qiji. From an early age, he inherited his family’s scholarly tradition and developed a deep passion for calligraphy. Under the guidance of his father, he practiced diligently for over twenty years, laying a solid foundation in calligraphy during his youth.
In 1985, he was fortunate to meet the celebrated calligrapher Mr. Wu Zhongqi, who took great interest in him. In 1987, he formally became Wu’s disciple. Over the next two decades under Wu’s tutelage, he received profound instruction in both scholarship and personal conduct, and his calligraphic skills advanced significantly. His style is characterized by simplicity, vigor, boldness, and an unconventional, unrestrained artistic charm.
For decades, he has devoted himself to the study of brush and ink, engaging extensively with renowned painters and calligraphers, and frequently organizing and participating in artistic exchange events. Immersed in this rich cultural environment, he constantly motivated himself, read widely in classical poetry and literature, honored tradition while innovating, and ultimately forged an artistic style that is elegant yet never vulgar, powerful yet never artificial. His works have frequently received acclaim from experts and scholars, and have been published in numerous periodicals and collected by art museums.
He currently serves as a member of the Provincial Calligraphers Association, advisor to the Jiaxuan Cultural Exchange Association, advisor to Shandong Yushan Academy, Vice President of the China Loving-Heart Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute, and advisor to several other artistic organizations.
