 Personal Profile

Zhang Xun, style name Yu, also known as "Sanfeng Shanren" and "Zuimo Xuanzhu," was born in 1965 in Linyi, Shandong Province. He successively graduated from Qufu Normal University and the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. For many years he studied under the renowned xiaoxieyi-style painter Wang Xuezhao, and is an official disciple of Ma Shizhi, a prominent contemporary master of bird-and-flower painting.
He currently holds the title of First-Class Artist, is a member of the Shandong Artists Association, advisor to the Linyi Artists Association, guest professor at the Confucius School of Fine Arts, vice president of the Wang Xuezhao Art Research Institute, vice president of the Wang Xizhi Research Society, vice president of Sun Qifeng Art Research Institute at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, vice chairman of the Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting Masters Research Association, deputy secretary-general of the China Calligraphy and Painting Association, executive vice president of the Hong Kong Great China Art Research Institute, senior painter at the Zhongyuan Painting Academy, council member of the China-Japan-Korea-New Zealand Calligraphers and Painters Friendship Alliance, president of the China Peony Painting Academy, and president of the Yizhou Painting Academy of China.
Born into a scholarly family, Zhang Xun was influenced by his grandfather from an early age and developed a deep passion for painting. By the time he reached adulthood, he had already extensively copied classical calligraphy models and painting manuals. Later, under Master Ma Shizhi, he focused on freehand bird-and-flower painting while also studying landscape art. For over forty years, regardless of weather or season, he has diligently pursued his craft with patience and perseverance, never ceasing his practice. The renowned painter Shi Weng once commented: "With reverence, he continues the earthbound essence of tradition; with sincere simplicity, he absorbs nature’s spiritual energy. Broadly absorbing tradition, deeply immersed in the path of painting, integrating literary insight and creating from the heart."
Respecting tradition while absorbing its finest techniques, Zhang does not confine himself to ancient methods. He boldly applies the brush, carefully refines details, captures spirit beyond appearance, and colors according to subject. He diligently studies historical painting manuals and masters, emulating their essence and extracting their brilliance, while humbly learning from contemporary experts. On one hand, he delves into tradition by studying ancient artists; on the other, he immerses himself in life, emphasizing sketching from nature—collecting inspiration from extraordinary peaks and capturing all things close to life. Skillfully employing techniques such as aged ink, broken ink with water collision, and leveraging the natural texture of raw rice paper, he creates unexpected and vibrant artistic effects—truly demonstrating unique craftsmanship. His works are rich in meaning, elegant in tone, and progressively reaching higher realms, where theory and technique deeply interweave, forming through fluent brushwork his own distinctive world of bird-and-flower painting.
Through years of diligent practice and refinement, he always approaches creation with full conception in mind before lifting the brush. As leaves flutter in the wind and flower shadows sway, it echoes the Zen saying: “It is not the wind moving, nor the banner moving—it is the mind of the wise that moves.” His bird-and-flower paintings are clear, elegant, and graceful, with vivid expressions, complex yet harmonious compositions, breaking conventional rules while remaining profoundly rooted. His landscape paintings exhibit strong, dynamic brushwork, rich ink washes, spontaneous thickness, and grand momentum. This stems not only from his solid and refined brush and ink skills but also from his profound cultural depth like still waters running deep, along with aesthetic contemplation and insights into the philosophy of Chinese painting. He was among the first professional painters to establish a studio on Yanchi Street in Linyi—the former residence of Wang Xizhi. It is precisely the rich cultural soil of the Yimeng region, combined with his unwavering determination to wear down even iron inkstones in pursuit of artistic soul, that has enabled him to persevere on his creative journey and ultimately see the clouds part.
In 1993, he was named a "Celebrity Painter" by China Central Television (CCTV). In 1997, he led a delegation to Hong Kong for artistic exchange, and has since made multiple visits to South Korea, Macau, and Taiwan for cultural exchanges. His works have frequently been selected for major domestic and international exhibitions and displayed in Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Some pieces are collected by the National Art Museum of China and foreign galleries. His works have been included in publications such as *Selected Contemporary Chinese Paintings*, *A Collection of One Hundred Contemporary Chinese Painters*, *The Essence of Contemporary Chinese Ink Art*, *Fine Works of Cross-Strait Chinese Calligraphy and Painting*, *Commemorative Album for the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Liberation Army*, *Fine Works of Artists from the Asia-Pacific Region*, and *Who's Who in World Chinese Literature and Art*, earning him the title of "Famous Contemporary Chinese Artist."
