Personal Profile

Tang Lei, styled Yishui, originally from Shandong, currently resides in Beijing. Influenced by his father’s generation since childhood, he began learning painting at an early age, studying under the renowned Chinese painting master Mr. Huang Weigeng and the oil painter and sculptor teacher Zhou Jianguo. He has achieved notable accomplishments in the fields of freehand Chinese painting featuring beasts, birds, insects, and figures, with brushwork that is vivid, natural, and elegant in style. Currently, he serves as Deputy Secretary-General of the China-Korea Calligraphy and Painting Art Exchange Association, a member of the Shandong Provincial Calligraphers and Painters Association, and the discipline leader of Chinese painting at Tianran International, a well-known domestic chain art education institution. He is also a specially appointed Chinese painting instructor for multiple renowned domestic online education platforms such as “Hongsong Academy” and “Lechangzu,” with a cumulative student base reaching hundreds of thousands. He is a co-founder of Beijing Qidi Art Education, a professional painter, and a senior cartoonist. In the field of Chinese painting creation and teaching, he emphasizes inheriting and promoting traditional Chinese painting techniques and philosophies, learning from the strengths of various schools while embracing eclecticism. He also advocates organically integrating Western painting techniques and concepts of light, shadow, and perspective, pursuing a synthesis of Eastern and Western styles and striving for innovation. For many years, he has persistently painted; his works are vivid in imagery and ingeniously conceived with a touch of wit. He participates annually in various domestic calligraphy and painting competitions and frequently wins awards. Many of his works have been purchased and collected by domestic art enthusiasts. His calligraphy and painting works are currently available for sale at multiple galleries in Beijing Rongbaozhai and those cooperating with Poly Auction. In 2020, his original series of Chinese painting instructional videos, “Learn Chinese Painting Easily: From Beginner to Advanced,” successfully launched on several well-known domestic video education platforms such as “iQIYI,” attracting a large number of learners and receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews. In addition to Chinese painting, he has also achieved remarkable success in cartoon creation. From 2001 to 2008, his cartoon series such as “Pai An Jing Qi,” “Jia You Cha Bao,” “Ren Shi Jian,” and “Hua Zhong You Hua” were serialized for years in more than ten well-known newspapers and magazines including “Global,” “China Newsweek,” “Sanlian Life Weekly,” “Economic Observer,” “Global Times,” and “International Herald Leader.” Additionally, as a columnist, he published nearly a thousand cartoons on political, social, and humanistic topics. During this period, he also served as an art consultant for several of the aforementioned newspapers and magazines.
