 Personal Profile

Wen Jie (original name Wen Lizhi), styled Yishi, owner of Gumozhai. Born in Jinan in 1965, he is the President of the Shandong Branch of China Cultural Industry News Broadcasting Agency, member of the China International Association of Craft and Art Masters, Secretary-General of the Shandong Entrepreneurs Calligraphy and Painting Association, Vice President of Shandong Huihuang Academy, specially appointed calligrapher of China Painting Capital Network, member of the Art Garden of China Painting Capital Network, member of Jinan Calligraphy Association, member of Shandong Dazhong Calligraphy and Painting Academy, and member of Jinan Yellow River Calligraphy and Painting Academy, etc.
Since childhood, he studied calligraphy under the guidance of his father, Mr. Wen Changjiu. His father, a strict teacher, personally instructed him orally and by example, maintaining a rigorous family tradition and orthodox inheritance. That is, “learn from the highest models.” Following his father’s teachings, he took Yan Zhenqing’s regular script as his foundational model; as he grew older, he explored Liu Gongquan’s style as a variation of Yan’s. For ten years, he practiced thus, then began studying the “Two Wangs” while adhering to Yan’s “Draft of a Requiem to His Nephew,” gradually entering the realm of running script. For twenty years, he dared not present his running script to the public—such was his reverence for tradition and obedience to his father’s instruction. During these twenty years, Master Yishi grounded himself in Yan’s style to capture its spirit, widely practiced the “Two Wangs” to absorb their rhythm, and selectively studied masters from the Jin and Tang dynasties onward to observe their techniques—even Su, Huang, Mi, Cai, Dong (Southern), and Xing (Northern) were all explored. Thus, he naturally developed his own distinctive style. Then, following his father’s command, he traveled thousands of miles, visiting renowned scholars across the land. Regarding calligraphy, he verified and broadened his understanding. After receiving guidance and enlightenment from Professor Bai Gengyan of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, he suddenly felt his mind open and unobstructed—this was true self-enlightenment! His calligraphic style transformed, and his running script matured. His calligraphy flows like clouds and water, yet retains majestic momentum; within its rises and falls, pauses and accents, it naturally resonates with rhythmic vigor and free-spirited elegance. Thus, although rooted in family tradition, his decades of practicing Yan’s style remain inseparable from his artistic essence.
In recent years, Master Yishi has further traced back to the Qin and Han dynasties, infusing the spirit of large seal script with the brush strength of clerical script, rendering his works even more dazzling and multi-layered, exhibiting an endless, overlapping momentum. If granted a few more years, might Master Yishi’s calligraphic style transform once again? Let us quietly wait and see.
