Tu Zhi Li

Tu Zhi Li
Personal Profile

Tu Zhili has been passionate about painting and calligraphy since childhood, specializing in landscape painting under the guidance of Professor Liu Wenshi, the founder of the Loess School. He holds unique insights into landscape painting. His works are rooted in tradition, inspired by ancient aesthetics, and emanate from his inner soul. Building upon tradition, he integrates his own understanding of nature and personal brushwork and ink techniques, achieving developments and breakthroughs in brushwork, ink application, light and shadow treatment, and color expression. His compositional layout and block handling are also ingeniously conceived, and he has extensively experimented with various landscape techniques. His style is ancient, clean, delicate, fresh, elegant, and evokes profound意境. A careful appreciation of his works brings a sense of ease and joy, as if wandering through vast wilderness or standing before a celestial realm. Su Dongpo once wrote: "To judge a painting by its resemblance to form is to share the perspective of a child." Qi Baishi also said, "Too similar is vulgar, too dissimilar is deceitful." The marvel of painting lies between resemblance and non-resemblance. From Mr. Tu Zhili's works, one can clearly perceive his solid foundation and profound skill—he excels in both detailed and freehand styles, expressing himself with complete freedom. As Zheng Banqiao emphasized in his sketch notes on painting, the importance of meticulous technique for freehand expression cannot be overstated: "How many have been misled by the term 'freehand'—deceiving others and oneself, ceasing to improve—all due to this flaw. One must achieve the highest level of meticulousness before one can truly master freehand; it is impossible to achieve freehand without mastering meticulous technique."
