Shang Hongjun
Personal Profile
Shang Hongjun, also known as Shang Shijun (11th generation descendant of Prince Shang Kexi of the Qing Dynasty), is from Haicheng, Liaoning Province. He began studying calligraphy and painting at the age of fourteen, and in his twenties joined the Calligraphy Associations of Anyang and Puyang Cities. In 1986, he graduated from the Henan Calligraphy Correspondence College with a specialization in clerical script (one-year program). For decades, he has persistently practiced the masterpieces of historical calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi, Sun Guoting, Wen Zhengming, and Huaisu during his spare time, drawing essence from them. He excels in regular script, running script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script (including oracle bone script), and also writes large-character inscriptions in various styles. His regular script is primarily inspired by Ouyang Xun and Liu Gongquan, demonstrating solid foundation, dignified structure, and adherence to tradition without being bound by it. His running script follows the models of Wang Xizhi, Mi Fu, and other masters throughout history, blending running and cursive styles with a balance of strength and grace, elegant and refined, with cohesive rhythm and a distinctive personal style. His clerical script inherits the style of the Cao Quan Stele, expansive and generous, elegant and profound, yet uniquely his own. His calligraphic style highlights the integration of inheritance and innovation, softness with inner strength, and transformation to capture spirit—writing with discipline, living with integrity. He has participated multiple times in provincial and national-level calligraphy competitions and exhibitions, winning awards. He is currently: Director of the China International Calligraphers Association; Assistant Director of the Painting and Calligraphy Research Institute, China International News Magazine; Honorary President of the Henan Painting and Calligraphy Professional Committee Art Academy; Member of the Henan Calligraphers Association; Guest Professor at the School of Art and Design, Anyang Institute of Technology.
