Zhang Ge,In the early 1980s, due to insufficient military funding, the military was permitted to participate in local economic construction to generate some operating income.One winter, our unit contracted a tract of primeval forest in the Tongbei Forest Farm of the Xiao Hinggan Mountains, taking on the labor task of logging and transporting the timber to the railway station; I led the truck fleet responsible for the transportation.There were no roads in the primeval forest; in winter, we used bulldozers to clear paths along riverbeds—just enough to allow vehicles to pass勉强行车即可, with steep slopes, sharp curves, icy surfaces, and tussocks everywhere, making driving extremely difficult and dangerous. Vehicles could only move at low speeds; sometimes, when two trucks met on narrow sections, the empty truck had to reverse to a wider spot to pass safely. Once, my truck slid on a snowy road and spun 180 degrees; unable to turn around, I had to drive backward for several miles before finding a place wide enough to turn. Covering more than one hundred kilometers took over ten hours. There was no heating system in the trucks, so I carried two fur coats, using them as both bedding and blankets, lying on the passenger seat—still relatively warm. All trucks were equipped with gasoline-powered heaters; when breakdowns occurred, it became unbearable. Across the vast snow-covered wilderness, devoid of human presence, if stranded at night without encountering another vehicle, we could only use the heater inside the cab to keep warm while waiting for rescue. Freezing was inevitable; falling into ditches or minor collisions were trivial matters, not worth mentioning. To transport logs, we removed the truck beds and installed custom-made iron racks constructed from rebar and angle iron, enabling each truck to carry over ten cubic meters of logs. Over three months of that winter, meals were irregular, sleep was fragmented, yet despite all hardships and dangers, under my leadership, the fleet completed the transportation mission without a single fatality, injury, or vehicle loss.Written on December 29, 2014.
