Personal Profile
Chen Yu, born in 1973, courtesy name Zai Xiong, art name Dong Wang, pen names Da Shi and Yi Liao Shanren. Born into a distinguished family of scholars, he has a moderate mastery of poetry, painting, calligraphy, and seal carving, with slight familiarity with Western techniques. Today, he is neither affiliated with any association nor part of any group, faction, school, or disciple; he holds only modest fame yet shuns vanity, indulges in ink and color while extensively exploring artistic pursuits, loves his brush as if it were life itself, and reveres paper and walls. Over the decades, his mural works have spread across the country and Southeast Asia, with a quantity unmatched in the industry—he is acclaimed as the “Jiangxi Number One Muralist” and “Jiangnan’s One Brush.” His fusion of Chinese and Western techniques in ink painting is an innovation unprecedented in China’s mural art scene, making him a leading figure in Chinese mural art.Chen Yu currently holds the following positions:Village Head of Lushan Painter’s Village;Director of the Art Gallery for Employees of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province;President of Lushan Painting Society;Member of the Art Committee of the Jiangnan Metropolitan Daily;Deputy Secretary-General of the Jiujiang Municipal Political Consultative Conference Art Association;Fujian Quanzhou Agricultural School Professor of Fine Arts.Like most people, Chen Yu has experienced periods of dormancy and times of bowing low—but these never turned him into the person he despised. While others navigate business through banquets and cultivate connections over meals, seeking favor through flattery and camaraderie through moral compromise… Chen Yu is different: he dislikes banquet culture, so he avoids it; he disapproves of bullying the weak, so he speaks out boldly. Time taught him to say no, and empowered him to reject the garbage life tries to force upon him. After seeing through the truth of life, he still holds fast to his original aspirations. Knowing the world’s ways yet remaining unworldly, dwelling among the mundane yet staying distant from its clamor—this is true maturity for an artist. Creating novelty within the bounds of tradition, embedding profound insight beyond boldness. The works emerging from Chen Yu’s brush are unpretentious and unrestrained, free and spirited, delivering an authentic visual impact that wins praise from both laymen and experts alike. This stems from his cultural cultivation, innate talent, and personal character—qualities that lifelong “painting professionals” can never attain.Rooted in Confucianism, infused with Zen, returning to Dao—empty yet not void, silent yet not extinguished, simple yet far-reaching, plain yet flavorful, lofty and untainted by worldly dust—perhaps this is the highest ideal of Zen painting. With his grand, weathered, proud, and vibrant brush, Chen Yu composes a youthful anthem for new China.
