Personal Profile
Li Yifan, originally named Li Mincai, hails from Liyang Village, Liyang Town, a thousand-year-old town in Changjiang District, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, where he was born in 1981. He is a specially appointed Senior Ceramic Art Consultant for Jiangxi Changnan Official Kiln Culture Development Co., Ltd., and a非遗 (Intangible Cultural Heritage) inheritor of ancient colored porcelain.
Influenced by his family’s ceramic culture, Li began studying under Master Chen Yunkai, the first-ever Ceramic Art Master of Jiangxi Province, in 1995, learning techniques such as sketching, famille rose, and traditional Chinese painting. He now specializes in replicating ancient colored porcelain and creating modern innovative ceramic works. His ancestor, Li Mianting, was a renowned engraver of porcelain during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China era; his grandfather was also a skilled柴窑 (wood-fired kiln) artisan. He has received meticulous guidance from National Master Zhang Yuxian and National Master Zhang Yinling. National Master Zhang Songmao has praised him for his humility and eagerness to learn, often complimenting his works upon first sight. The centenarian ceramic master Wang Xiliang personally mentored him. His works emphasize artistic conception—rooted in life yet transcending it.
He has published the paper “A Brief Analysis of Color Control in Ancient Colored Porcelain” in Jingdezhen Ceramics, Issue 6, 2018;
His work “Huqing Chuyu Tu” won the Gold Award at the 3rd Dadi Awards;
The reproduced “Snow Blue Ancient Colored Porcelain Plate with Window-style Bird-and-Flower Design,” created to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC, received the Silver Award;
His work “Guan Canghai Porcelain Panel,” exhibited at the First National Intangible Cultural Heritage Joint Exhibition commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC, won the Gold Award.
To express his artistic homage to the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the PRC, he created the red-themed porcelain panel “Autumn Love” and the “Alphabet Fortune” tea set, both overflowing with profound affection for the motherland, hoping that the imprint of patriotism will be deeply etched into the hearts of all Chinese descendants. For many years, he has devoted himself to researching the techniques and proportions of raw materials, passionately focusing on reviving lost ancient colored porcelain techniques. He frequently produces precise 1:1 replicas for museums. For over two decades, he has never participated in exhibitions, always saying he has no time—but in truth, he dedicates every moment to creating and preserving masterpieces of art and heritage. Under his hands, the lost Kangxi-era ancient colored porcelain has been brilliantly revived. His dedication and craftsmanship are best evidenced by his outstanding works. He is grateful to live in harmony with porcelain—it is his finest solitude; external noise can never overshadow the timeless elegance of ancient porcelain. Life is made beautiful by porcelain. Following the 70th Anniversary celebration, “Through wind and rain, seventy years of journey; breaking waves, setting sail anew; happiness and health under the Party’s leadership; remembering the source of blessings; glorious missions fulfilled by martyrs; unprecedented prosperity in history.” The work “Autumn Love” was meticulously created to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the PRC. It employs traditional ancient colored porcelain painting techniques on flat porcelain panels. He immerses himself entirely in the rigorous study of painting, rarely documenting his artistic achievements in words. “Picking chrysanthemums beneath the eastern fence, calmly gazing upon the southern hills; yellow leaves of the huting tree cannot be swept away—only chrysanthemums dare to bloom first.” This piece reflects the artist’s inner voice, using objects to symbolize human virtues and aspirations. When all other flowers wither and leaves turn yellow, the autumn chrysanthemum stands proudly, enduring frost and freezing cold. Through the chrysanthemum, he praises the indomitable spirit of revolutionaries—defiance against frost and wind embodies revolutionary optimism! The Princess Chrysanthemum, tender and full of emotion, captivates with quiet grace; delicately observed, one sees the refined elegance of a maiden’s heart. Golden and fiery red chrysanthemums bloom in myriad graceful forms. Joyful butterflies flutter freely in the sunlight. At the center of a golden circular motif, tiny, adorable stamens cling tightly together. Set against several palm-shaped green leaves, each curve is perfectly balanced, lines flowing yet strong and vigorous, vivid and beautiful. The crane stands atop a crimson crown—national elegance and noble wealth! Fiery red petals cluster together, symbolizing the unity of the motherland as it overcomes countless difficulties—like flames of burning love, the motherland nurtures each of us, cultivating countless blossoms that strive to serve the nation. The red chrysanthemum leaves, green and vibrant, represent the motherland itself. This lifelike masterpiece, invaluable and enduring, withstands the test of time and is highly sought after by collectors worldwide, receiving exceptional acclaim. A beacon of hope for China’s contemporary official kiln tradition!
