The Artistic Pursuit of Painter Duan Hongbo — by Dong Zibiao
Painter Duan Hongbo’s diligence is well known in the art community; his artworks, meticulously studied and refined, consistently reveal remarkable highlights. Although born in southern China, Duan Hongbo has spent many years living in the northwest, and this is vividly reflected in his paintings, which exude the boldness and purity characteristic of northwest men, while also subtly conveying the delicacy unique to southerners.
Some of his works blend meticulous detail with freehand brushwork. In his paintings, even tiny creatures such as bees and butterflies, as well as larger subjects like galloping deer and yaks, are rendered with clear, lifelike forms, harmoniously complementing the overall expressive style—灵动而美妙.
Professor Duan excels in the use of color in his bird-and-flower paintings, placing particular emphasis on the aesthetic of ink. He skillfully employs variations in ink’s dryness, wetness, darkness, and lightness to capture subtle transitions of depth and richness, using vibrant hues to encapsulate the dazzling diversity of nature’s flora. His depictions of peonies, wisteria, and immortal peaches feature bold, vivid colors, rendered with exquisite precision.
Likewise, his landscape paintings are the result of keen observation and thoughtful abstraction of nature. His compositions are rich in symbolic elements, employing techniques such as outlining, texturing, and washing to express his inner feelings through ink and brush, emphasizing the beauty of artistic conception.
His western landscapes utilize large areas of color to convey a sense of majestic grandeur—white, yellow, or red—applied with spontaneous, masterful brushwork that never fails to captivate the viewer. The layered composition, with vertically rising and interwoven rocks and trees, evokes an ancient, timeless atmosphere. Color harmonizes seamlessly with composition and form, generating profound aesthetic appeal. The foreground rocks and distant sky merge completely, while swirling snowflakes drift across the scene, intensifying the viewer’s unique sense of the western landscape.
His works place special emphasis on poetic resonance and atmosphere; some are even uniquely innovative, appealing equally to refined and popular tastes, thereby highlighting the spiritual depth and artistic realm of traditional Chinese painting.
