Personal Profile
MIU Peiren, the Seven-Without Hermit, was born in Jiangnan, roamed overseas, and styled himself as "a crane of Jiangnan" and "a wandering traveler of the world." The Seven-Without Hermit loved Chinese painting since childhood, constantly practicing with brush and ink, and even more so as he grew older. He once deeply studied the works of Shi Tao, Bada, Wu Changshuo, Fu Baoshi, Zhang Daqian, and Pan Tianshou, but after a long time, he became tired of them, feeling constrained. One day, he suddenly realized that painting is a momentary feeling, a fleeting imagination. Painting is one's own temperament, one's own clouds and dreams. Painting is an unspoken poetic interest, a silent symphony. With the changes of the sea and the fields, the survival of the fittest, inheritance is the gene, only change is the way of heaven. Why should one imitate others, binding oneself like a cocoon?
In the Tang Dynasty, Zhang Xu was called "Zhang the Mad," and Huaisu continued his madness, achieving the two supreme styles of cursive script, all due to their natural dispositions. A person should not be arrogant or overbearing, but in calligraphy and painting, it is precious to be unrestrained, even audacious, to be independent and unique, thus forming one's own style. Thus, he found joy in brush and ink, and inspiration in abstraction.
What are the Seven-Without? Without school, without sect, without rules, without care, great form without shape, ink and brush without restraint, and without abiding yet keeping the heart.
What is "without"? A person who is naturally indifferent and lazy. Admiring freedom, galloping like a heavenly horse, traveling thousands of miles, yet never losing the simplicity and original intention. Learning from nature, gaining the mystery of creation, thus attaining great freedom.
