Personal Profile
Yigong (Xu Guolin), born in 1956 in Zhejiang Shaoxing, began copying stele inscriptions at the age of six under the influence of his grandfather. A graduate of the Chinese Department of Nanjing Normal University, he is a National First-Class Artist, “Ambassador for Sino-American Cultural Exchange,” and a direct disciple of the renowned calligrapher Wu Zhongqi. Grounded in the principles of “Tang stele’s vigor, Wei-Jin spirit, and broad study of various masters,” he reveres ancient traditions while embracing the present, following the natural way of Dao. Currently, he serves as Vice President of the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Research Association, Professor at Sanjiang University, National Ministry of Commerce State Gift Calligrapher, and President of Jiangsu Jiudingzhai Calligraphy and Painting Academy. His works have been widely circulated to countries and regions including the United States, France, Russia, South Korea, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, Taiwan, Macao, and Hong Kong. He has also been featured in special reports by media outlets such as Beijing Museum, Guangxi Museum, Jiangsu TV, Hunan TV, Shandong TV, Zhejiang TV, China Art Newspaper, and PLA Daily. Yigong (Xu Guolin) has deeply inherited the authentic teachings of his master Wu Zhongqi: his large-character calligraphy is majestic and robust, firm yet expansive; his cursive script balances motion and stillness, rhythmically varied and gracefully unrestrained, exuding grandeur and openness. Writing reflects the person; its value lies in expressing aspiration, and characters reveal the soul. His calligraphic art is, in essence, the concrete manifestation of decades of broad-mindedness, expansive vision, unwavering perseverance, and noble character — radiating the spirit of the socialist era, representing the highest realm of calligraphic creation!
In November 2017, he became a Featured Artist of the Sydney Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Network, Australia.
