贺 Jian, originally named He Jianli, style name Mulin, pseudonym Shanren, was born in December 1969 in Huaiyin, Jiangsu. His ancestral home is Shandong, later moved to Anhui. He graduated from the undergraduate program of the School of Fine Arts at Fuyang Normal University in Anhui. He once studied at the Shanghai Higher Education Calligraphy Education Research Association, and later entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts for further studies in calligraphy. He is currently a member of the China Modern Youth Calligraphers Association, the China Hard Pen Calligraphers Association, and the Jiangsu Calligraphers Association. Many of his works have participated in international and domestic exchange exhibitions, won awards multiple times, and have been included in newspapers and magazines. His personal art biography has been included in "The Chinese Contemporary Art World Celebrity Collection".
Teacher He Jian has loved painting and calligraphy since childhood. Due to a poor family background and a difficult life, under the careful guidance of his private tutor He Qinchang, he studied diligently and practiced hard. He repeatedly copied the "Taibao Tower Stele" by Yan Zhenqing, the "Jiucheng Palace Liqueur Spring Inscription" by Ouyang Xun, the "Xuanyi Pagoda Stele" by Liu Gongquan, the "Cao Quan Stele", the "Zhangqian Stele", the "Zhang Menglong Stele", the "Shigu Wen - Wu Changshuo's Shigu Wen", the "Lanting Xu" by Wang Xizhi, and the "Songfengge Poem Scroll" by Huang Tingjian. At the age of twelve, he became famous in his hometown. At sixteen, due to his outstanding calligraphy and literary talent, he was admitted as a member of the Youth Calligraphy Research Association of Huaian City, Jiangsu Province, and was called "the Young Scholar" by people in and out of the town. Later, he studied under the famous calligraphers Wei Tianchi, Jiang Hua, and Zhu Bing. He has done extensive research on regular script, clerical script, cursive script, and seal script.
* In May 1987, he participated in the first national "Meibao Cup" calligraphy grand prize competition and won the Excellent Award;
* In April 1989, his calligraphy work won the second prize in the "Qinhai Cup" National Calligraphy Grand Prize Competition, and his work was exhibited nationwide;
* In May 1990, his work won the Exhibition Award in the Agfa - Chinese Hard Pen Calligraphy Art China Exhibition, and was selected for the opening exhibition at the Beijing Ethnic Culture Palace;
* In July 1997, his calligraphy work was selected for the "Celebrating the Return of Hong Kong to the Motherland" World Wide Chinese Calligraphy Competition, and won the "Best Creation Award" in the competition;
* In August 1998, his calligraphy work was selected for the "98 Jiangsu Province Mass Art Activity Week", and he was awarded the title of "Farmer Calligrapher".
