Personal Profile
Wen Weijun is a professional calligrapher and freelance artist, styled as Guo Yan, holding a bachelor’s degree. He was born into a scholarly family in a small mountain village by the beautiful “Land of Fish and Rice”—Hunan’s Dongting Lake. Four generations of his immediate family have been engaged in education, fostering a rich and profound familial academic tradition. From childhood, Wen Weijun was immersed in the cultural atmosphere of ink and brush, tirelessly reading widely and persistently practicing calligraphy, laying a solid foundation for his cultural literacy and artistic skills in calligraphy. In particular, his maternal grandfather was a renowned master of calligraphy and painting in the region. Under his grandfather’s early guidance and meticulous instruction, Wen Weijun established a firm foundation for developing a traditional and authentic artistic style and cultivating profound, refined calligraphic skills. Wen Weijun began learning calligraphy at age six, diligently copying classical models and studying the styles of numerous masters, with special focus on the art of Yan Zhenqing, the great Tang dynasty calligrapher. “Hard work never betrays the earnest heart”—by his teens, he had already developed exceptional handwriting, earning admiration from elders and recognition from peers. He has since become a member of the Chinese Hard-Pen Calligraphers Association, a member of the Hunan Provincial Calligraphers Association, Deputy Director of the Lingnan Office of Calligraphy Daily, a contracted calligrapher with the Henan Art Poverty-Alleviation Center, and a council member of the Taojiang Calligraphy Association. He completed a research course at the Training Center of the China Calligraphers Association. In his childhood, he often practiced martial arts and large-character writing alongside his grandfather. After graduating from school, he joined a dance troupe, worked as a silversmith, and operated a pawnshop. As a dancer, martial artist, and traveler, he absorbed profound insights into the philosophy of calligraphy, broadening his horizons and honing himself through diverse experiences. In his calligraphic practice, he continuously draws nourishment from classical models such as Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Yan Zhenqing, Wang Duo, He Shaoji, and Zhao Zhiqian, enriching his foundational skills. He has developed an artistic style characterized by excellent brush sensitivity and bold, vigorous brushwork. He excels in clerical script, regular script, Yan-style running script, and cursive script, and extensively studies the ink traces and stele inscriptions of the Wei, Jin, and Six Dynasties periods. His works are distinguished by their spontaneous, natural charm, extraordinary dynamism, deep yet exhilarating expressiveness, and elegant vitality. His works have been collected by art museums both domestically and internationally.                                                       After achieving success and establishing his reputation, Wen Weijun has never forgotten to pass on his calligraphic skills to a wide audience of enthusiasts. In 2016, he founded the Yan Calligraphy Studio in Yilongwan, Gao Bu, Dongguan. Since 2009, he has actively dedicated himself to calligraphy education in schools and institutions, teaching at the Zhejiang Tianxiang Book Garden, as well as numerous organizations, schools, and units in Dongguan, helping many calligraphy enthusiasts establish a solid foundation.                     “The road ahead is long and arduous; I shall seek and explore tirelessly.” The path of art is infinitely vast, and the vitality of art is profoundly profound. I write from my heart; each dot is a reflection of my soul. The brush is not merely a tool for sweeping lines—it is an extension of thought and consciousness. Holding the brush is a tactile way of perceiving and touching the world. Brushstrokes and lines are not only traces of the brush, but also tangible proofs of bodily awareness and perception of the world. The more vivid and lively the brushwork, the more it embodies individuality and vitality—the very life force of art. Let the sincerity of life converge at the tip of the brush and flow freely through the lines, endowing black and white with a world of profound charm and philosophical depth!
