Wu Weiqiang, male, Han ethnicity, born in 1969, originally from Jiuzeping Village, Qingtangpu Town, Anhua, Yiyang, Hunan. He has lived in seclusion in Anhua for many years. Since childhood, he has been deeply passionate about calligraphy. At the age of thirteen, he began practicing the styles of Ouyang Xun and Huang Ziyuan; at twenty-four, he switched to studying Liu Gongquan’s scripts and diligently explored Wang Xizhi’s works. For thirty years, he has steadfastly adhered to the principle: “Never a day without pen touching paper, every insight expressed through ink.” His brushwork is delicate and his structure highly varied. His calligraphic style is characterized by refined techniques and breathtaking beauty—his characters form a unique aesthetic, elegant and ethereal, beloved by people across all walks of life.

Wu Weiqiang, son of Anhua people… Is it Anhua’s mountains and rivers that nurtured his calligraphy, or was it his innate talent? On his journey of learning calligraphy, from the youthful days of his adolescence to today, past middle age and nearing old age, he has truly embodied the phrase: “Endured countless hardships, unwavering in devotion, youth’s ambition never speaks of sorrow!” In his early years, Wu traveled far and wide—from northern Shaanxi to eastern Shandong, southward to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Through trials and tribulations, this son of Anhua accumulated profound depth and strength, forging within him a humanistic sentiment as vast and stirring as mountains, and an obsessive dedication as unyielding and resolute as Anhua’s stones…
Wu Weiqiang’s turning point in calligraphy came when, upon entering his forties, he finally achieved in studying Liushu (Liu Gongquan’s style) a state of calm composure, natural ease, harmonious energy flow, and perfect unity between person and brush.
“A thousand mountains and rivers on one path, a single brush travels the world”—this is the true reflection of Wu Weiqiang’s calligraphy journey. He has embarked on a “path of no return” in calligraphy, as he himself says: “Others cannot go a day without food; I cannot go a day without writing.”
Wu Weiqiang is humble and reserved, possessing a distinct affinity for niche pursuits. He strives for spontaneity and naturalness, following his inner feelings… As the saying goes, “The character reflects the person”; his calligraphy constantly exudes a subtle naturalness and quiet elegance.
Approaching his calligraphy, one perceives not only the rhythm of mountains but also the fluidity of water… His script displays strength and grace, solemn yet free-spirited. He has infused into his work the deep affection he holds for his hometown, Anhua—merging natural landscapes such as mountains, waters, forests, waterfalls, gorges, and streams seamlessly with the Liu-style calligraphy, achieving a harmonious whole that forms his own distinctive style.
Today, Wu Weiqiang makes friends through “calligraphy” and connects through “characters,” spending his days busy between his studio and courier companies. His admirers span the length and breadth of China, even extending to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Europe, and America. As the proverb goes, “Fine wine needs no busy street”—Wu’s humility and distance across thousands of miles do not diminish people’s admiration for and pursuit of his calligraphy!
