Personal Profile
Yan Chunping, male, born in 1963, is from Xiantao, Hubei. He is known by the art name Dayuan and the studio name Yunyi Shanfang Master; Deputy Director of the Painting and Calligraphy Department at the China Great Unity Cultural Art Exchange Center, National First-Class Calligrapher and Painter, Researcher at the Shaanxi Xiqin Calligraphy and Painting Academy, and member of the Provincial Calligraphy Association. His calligraphy works have been exhibited more than twenty times at national and provincial exhibitions and are highly appreciated and collected by calligraphy enthusiasts across the country.
Ancient masters said, "Each stroke is broken yet connected," which constitutes the sublime realm—this is how ancient calligraphers described the brushwork in cursive script. As the highest expression of calligraphy art, cursive script fully embodies momentum, rhythm, and musicality through the skillful interplay of connection and separation. "Separation" and "connection" are among the most challenging aspects of cursive brushwork. Mr. Yan Chunping's brushwork is delicate and rich, with distinct rhythmic movements. Almost every stroke exhibits clear pauses, presses, lifts, and transitions; the line forms are sharply angular, creating strong block-like effects. The origin and development of each brush movement are meticulously articulated, demonstrating the richness of cursive lines—the opposing elements such as circular turns, angular breaks, linking, severing, lightness and heaviness, lifting and pressing are skillfully applied and transformed throughout the beginning, middle, and end of each stroke. In terms of structure and composition, variations in size, lateral interweaving, and vertical displacement further enhance the sense of motion in the characters, rendering them lively, agile, and full of vitality—evidencing the extraordinary diversity and complexity of his brush technique.
Mr. Yan Chunping's calligraphy draws its roots from the artistic traditions of successive dynasties, forming a style that is both grounded in solid technique and distinctly personal. He draws upon the essence of master calligraphers throughout history without being confined to their stylistic conventions; his brushstrokes, structure, and form all pursue a sense of subtlety and charm. Mr. Yan has deeply studied calligraphy and has developed profound insights, emphasizing discipline, drawing inspiration from ancient models, pursuing balance and harmony, while clearly expressing individuality—his work is deeply evocative and rewarding to contemplate.
Mr. Yan Chunping specializes primarily in running and cursive scripts, yet he has also achieved considerable mastery in seal, clerical, and regular scripts.
