Personal Profile
Li Dexiang, styled Shuren, male, was born in April 1964 in Hubei Zhongxiang, with a college diploma, working as a teacher. He is a member of the China Hard-Pen Calligraphers Association, a member of the Hubei Provincial Calligraphers Association, a council member of the Jingmen City Calligraphers Association in Hubei Province, vice chairman of the Zhongxiang City Calligraphers Association, and chairman of the Dongqiao Town Calligraphy Association in Zhongxiang.
Influenced by his mother, he has been intimately connected with brush, ink, paper, and inkstone since childhood. In 1980, he became a private primary school teacher in a rural village. After entering the teaching profession, he remained deeply immersed in calligraphy, driven by his passion and dedication to the art. He initially studied Tang dynasty regular script, later focused on the small regular script of Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, and Zhong Yao, while also studying running, cursive, clerical, and seal scripts. He extensively copied famous calligraphic masterpieces, absorbing the essence of calligraphy through diligent study and persistent effort. In 1986, he enrolled in a correspondence course offered by the Shanghai Calligraphy Research Society, receiving multiple critiques and guidance from Professor Yao Jiang Lu Qian, and was awarded second prize for his graduation work. He was subsequently admitted as a member of the Shanghai Calligraphy Research Society. Starting the following year, he became a council member of the Zhongxiang City Calligraphy and Fine Arts Association in Hubei Province.
His relentless pursuit of calligraphic art has gradually shaped his unique, fresh, and elegant artistic style—his works retain the solemnity of tradition while embodying the beauty of modern calligraphy. His individual pieces have been exhibited, selected, or awarded in calligraphy exhibitions and competitions at national, provincial, and municipal levels. Numerous works have been collected by friends and enthusiasts in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and other overseas regions.
As a current educator, he has long served as a calligraphy teacher. Since 2013, he has continuously worked as a part-time calligraphy instructor at the Zhongxiang City Youth Activity Center, nurturing young calligraphy talents. Over the years, dozens of his students have won awards in provincial-level calligraphy competitions.
For the past three years, he has consistently served as a guiding instructor for the Education System’s Youth Teacher Competency Enhancement Project in the field of calligraphy. Designated by the Municipal Education Bureau as a calligraphy judge, he is responsible for guiding and evaluating teachers’ basic skills in writing with both brush and hard-pen, playing a vital role in enhancing the calligraphy proficiency and overall quality of Zhongxiang’s teaching staff.
